Why is only one/2 swords active
« on: April 30, 2023, 09:27:00 PM »
Its always bothered me 3 swords are enough for the whole planet. 30 denarii, countless gods and monsters. 3 swords will do thank you every much.
And then during most of  the series, there are only 2 active swords mostly one. Why? Thin eliminating the Red Court sent 3 swords. Enthinu (sp no time to check) sent 2. Here the thing it part of the plan.
Mr Sunshine is a master Chessplayer. He using batman gambits , Xanatos gambits and who knows what else. What if the presence of all three swords would have prevented the BC from being active. Nemesis would be more careful in its plans. Less reckless.
Think Nic’s plan in Skingame. He made sure the sword was far away. What if in order to get the villains to act prematurely. Dude removes the swords to get the villains to act before they are ready. Giving team Inside the chance to win

It’s Harry, he too is a champion of the White God, but on a different mission, one for which the swords are not always suited.

In Battle Ground the swords were in play not to defeat Ethnui but to prevent Harry from murdering Rudy, and removing Harry’s capacity as a champion for the White God. Harry was therefore able to beat Ethnui.

This leads to the question of who exactly was behind Rudy and whether it was infernal in nature, as Uriel can only act where there has been an infernal influence. Namshiel was in play the only one of the Fallen involved in Battle Ground, but there is no indication he influenced Rudy.

WOJ on this:
How…how long will they have to wait to find out who will wield the Swords?
We’ll probably get the new wielder of Fidelacchius in Book 14 or 15. Um, Amoracchius is gonna, uh…(Jim chuckles evilly), that’s gonna be apocalypse time by the time we get [unintelligible].  Amoracchius is not one of those Swords that really rampages around the world very often, and when if does, you’ve heard about it, so..."

I think Uriel may have other issues that enable him to take action.

He can only act to engage the Infernal, when the Infernal itself has crossed the line.

But I think he likely has some interest in keeping the Outsiders on the Outside, too; and presumably they too have "excesses" that get his attention and his engagement.

Also:  Nammy is the only Denarian we saw at the Battle of Chicago; others could have been present, but kept away from Harry and/or from the Castle and/or from Nammy.

Interesting thought after discussing the Denarians and their inability to be kept out of circulation because of a balance... Are the Angels sitting out minor disputes they could act in to "save up" eventual bigger actions in more dire situations?

In a word, yes.  In all of this free will is in play, angels cannot get in the middle of that.  Denarians are powerless unless a mortal of his or her own free will picks up and accepts a coin.  In Changes Uriel could not just heal Harry's broken back, though he had the ability to do so.  All he could really do is confirm that Maggie was indeed his child and point out that Harry still had choices.  He could only step in when Lasciel upset the balance by pushing Harry to suicide.. Even then he pushed a soul walk about for Harry because there were lessons he had to learn on his own, Uriel could not do any of that for him.

Almost makes you think Michael kinda could have dropped it after slaying the whole Dragon. That's what he did with it, Susan with Amorrachius helped shut down the Red Court, then Michael used it to release the Weapons of the Crucifixion, kinda makes 'saving the Archive' seem a bit weaksauce for all the years he had it after saving Charity. ;)

C'mon guys it's not anything complicated.

The other Swords aren't active because Heaven outsourced recruitment to some asshole in Chicago that was too busy wallowing in self pity/sleeping at the wheel to find any more knights to weird them.

That lazy fool spends half his weekends sleeping off hangovers in the sub basement, and the other half getting drunk on a boat in the middle of the lake...  Then spends the rest of his time carving wood or jewelry but doesn't even try to sell them.

Always seems to have enough money but never really makes enough... Underworld connections if you ask me... illicit for sure.

The thing is:  the Knights make their ways to the Swords, when it's needed.
No matter how unlikely the Knight, or how improbable the way there.

It only looks like Harry is supposed to go out and find new Knights.  He's supposed to hold on to any Sword(s) until the Knights come to him.

Yes, and the fit has to be right or it can end in disaster as we saw with Murphy.  She was a Knight for one night, did right by it.. Then she took it upon herself, she wasn't a Knight at that point and a broken blade was the result.  The Sword of Faith wouldn't let Susan touch it in Death Masks, but the Sword of Love was cool with her wielding it to save her daughter in Changes.
