Since Changes, has Harry lied?
« on: May 11, 2021, 10:16:22 PM »
Subject says it all. Has Harry lied since he accepted the mantle? And I mean that in the fae way. Has he told an outright mistruth. Not from a certain point of view. Not a lie of omission. Not agreeing with someone's misstatement or misperception. And outright mistruth?

The fae can't lie, but has Mab incorporated not lying into Winter Law? Since at least two of her vassals are mortal and have free will, and Maeve was Nfected and could lie despite possibly being fae.

Not that I've noticed, but not being deceitful was a big part of Harry's character since the beginning. He tended to avoid uncomfortable conversations and just told people he wasn't going to give them information because it would endanger them.

If so, it's since Slate's time. I don't know that Winter Law is that changeable.

Harry doesn't outright lie that often anyway. The only one I can think of was faking surrender to Lea in GP, and that burned him pretty badly. He's a lot more inclined toward omission than falsehoods.

Since the Knight isn't a Fae, he or she is free to lie... But no, lying isn't Harry's MO.. ::)

I guess the question isn't has Harry lied, but CAN Harry lie since he accepted the mantle.

WRT to Slate, I'd have to go back and read Summer Knight with a fine toothed comb to see if Slate lied openly.

Lloyd Slate outright lied when he said that he didn't kill the Summer Knight.

Harry - Did you kill Ronald Reuel?"

Slate burst out laughing. "Christ, Dresden. You don't waste time, do you?"

"I've filled my insincere courtesy quota for the day," I said. "Did you kill him?"

Slate shrugged and said, "No. To be honest with you, I'm not sure I could have killed him."

The Winter Knight's mantel doesn't stop him from lying.  I don't believe Mab can change this rule because it would interfere with the free will of her Knight.  Even if I'm wrong about this, it would diminish her Knight by constraining him in a way that is antithetical to having a mortal champion in the first place.  It would be the first step on a slippery downward slope of having a mediocre and ineffective Knight.

The Sidhe can not lie but wizards are already one step in that direction. Violating your given word can have serious consequences to begin with a loss of power.

Thanks, that's the one I was thinking of.
