Murphy- [BG Spoilers]
« on: October 14, 2020, 06:55:32 PM »
Edited for spoiler in the title.
 - Griff

I thought it might be nice to have a remembrance for the first main character to die in the story. So pull up a stool, grab a bottle of Mac's, and remember favorite/most memorable moments, theories, and condolences to those that had some pretty believable theories until Jim laughed in our faces and killed them.

So I guess to start out, my most memorable moment would have to be in Changes when she pulls the sword and starts mowing down vampires. Seems we all thought we had our second Knight then.

The theory that I had come up with that stands out in my mind was Murphy, after SG, becoming more of an Oracle figure from DC comics for Harry and Co.

So feel free to share your thoughts. But please play nice.

Proven Guilty for me. I mean, she did storm Arctis Tor WITHOUT divine support. She had allies, but she herself was just human.

I think the idea is great, but could you change the title? Remember it can be seen from the main board, i.e. people who has not entered the spoiler zone

Murphy put the boots on. Time and time again. Also, I believe the proper term is chlorofiend.

I think my favorite Murphy moment was when she went off on what jerks the White Council are in the Walmart cafe. It was the first time Harry had a friend who sided with him against someone giving him the short end of the stick.

I want to nominate the "False gods!" declaration from Changes, even though it wasn't, strictly speaking, Murphy's words. It was still goddamn amazing and got me pumped the first time I read it in a way few books ever have.

I'll always have a soft spot for her making Tiny back down at Mac's, though.

Or driving off Dierdre by pulling Fidelacchius one inch out of its scabbard.

Leading the Wyld Hunt with Harry atop a motorcycle cum Battlecat...

There's just so many.

Hail, Warrior.

She was a boss in Aftermath. Took on a major Fomor threat while still mourning Harry. She held things together when no one else could until he came back.

Oh, so many moments. Some that have to do with how fierce she was and some that have to do with how much she cared for Harry.

In Summer Knight, when Harry tells her everything about the Council and she takes his side.
In Something Borrowed, she literally walks through fire in complete trust of Harry.
In Changes, everything about it, from the beginning when she knows she's risking everything to help Harry save his daughter to that amazing battle and her wielding the sword. In that moment she was the angel that Harry kept seeing in his Sight of her.
In Aftermath, even though she was scared, she was brave.
In Cold Days, riding with the Hunt. Telling Harry that she would stick by him.
And last in Peace Talks this was a small moment, but very beautiful, it cuts deep now but it is one of my favorites:

Quote
“What if …” I swallowed. “What if that’s me, one day? What if that’s what I’m like?”
“There’s a difference between you and him,” Murph said.
“Yeah?”
She moved a bit, leaned down, and kissed my forehead. “Yeah. You’ve got me.”

Which honestly makes me think Karrin's death was an accident as much as her father's death was a suicide, but that, I suppose, is a different topic.

And I'm sure there are more moments that I'll remember later.

The day Murph came blasting through a door while Harry had his Sight open, and the image seared into his mind was that of a literal guardian angel.  Powerful, fierce, and eminently devoted to doing what's right.

Murph showing off her motorcycle skills in the battle for Demonreach... Out on the freaking LAKE.

The sound advice she gave Harry on how to deal with a family fight, to try and help him cope with what did and would happen between him and his grandfather.

Still pushing onward despite being kicked off the head of SI.
Learning enough Martian to be able to communicate effectively.
Striking the first real blow against the Fomor despite having no magic at her disposal.

And so much more.

I have a couple of favorite Murphy moments.

From Changes:
“Let me put this in terms that will get through your skull: My friend is going to save a child from monsters. I’m going with him. That’s what friends do, Harry.”

Also from Changes
"If you make some comment even obliquely alluding to menstruation or menopause and its effect on my judgment," Murphy interrupted, "I will break your arm in eleven places."

From Summer Knight:
"Karrin."
She looked up at me. She looked very young somehow.
"Remember what I said yesterday," I said. "You're hurt. But you'll get through it. You'll be okay."
She closed her eyes tightly. "I'm scared. So scared I'm sick."
"You'll get through it."
"What if I don't?"
I squeezed her fingers. "Then I will personally make fun of you every day for the rest of your life," I said. "I will call you a sissy girl in front of everyone you know, tie frilly aprons on your car, and lurk in the parking lot at CPD and whistle and tell you to shake it, baby. Every. Single. Day."
Murphy's breath escaped in something like a hiccup. She opened her eyes, a mix of anger and wary amusement easing into them in place of fear. "You do realize I'm holding a gun, right?"
