Miss Cavendish = Michelle Gomez?
« on: October 10, 2015, 01:16:04 PM »
I don't normally do fan-casting in my head, but from the first scene with Sycorax Cavendish, I saw and heard her as Michelle Gomez, specifically in her role as "Missy" in recent episodes of Doctor Who. I know the book has been in the planning stages for a while, so it almost certainly wasn't intentional. I was probably also influenced by "Sycorax" being a name used in Doctor Who (originally from Shakespeare, yes, I know). I'm wondering if anybody else saw her that way?

I actually saw her as a normally proportioned Yu Baba from Spirited Away.  Gomez isn't a bad model though.

I like her as the Mistress.  She might be good as a Cavendish, but I wonder if it's too constrained for her.  Is Cavendish a brunette?

Helen Mirren might be interesting as a Cavendish too.

I thought in Helen Mirren too!

Missy was the image I got in my head too, though mostly just as my most recent image of an Evil Mary Poopins.  In terms of a Casting I think she's a bit too old for Cavendish.  Cavendish is a former student of Ferus, who's not immensely old, so I'd cap her age at around 40 or so.

I imagined her about 50, but your take may be better, judging by Espira's reaction-

Ooh, that's actually pretty close.  I tend to default to charlize theron these days for that brand of Crazy (ever since the Snow White movie) but Blanchett has the stark, angular features that I picture.

yeah! and most of all I love her for the part because of her proficiency at smiling without smiling xD.  Imagining that lady with the ability to make me claw out my own eyes with her mind gives me the shivers.

If y'all are going to bring up that new Cinderella movie, then Helena Bonham Carter comes to mind.  Besides the fact that I'm in love with her, HBC is awesome enough to pull off Cavendish.

I was thinking Lucy Liu myself. Miss Cavendish reminded me very much of O-Ren Ishii.

I can't imagine Bonham Carter as Cavendish at all, sorry.
But I pictured Izma, from the Emperor's new groove :D

Jim described Cavendish as Evil Mary Poppins. :) And since Missy has been described as evil Mary Poppins, it sure fits.

HBC has also been in Jane Austen movies and such.  Don't go think that Harry Potter and Fight Club are the core of her work.

I've seen in her in several movies (mostly Burton's, I admit), but I still don't like her for Cavendish.
