Credit Card Fraud - A Stunt?
« on: April 12, 2013, 08:44:34 AM »
One of my group is creating a Fae Grifter for our game. He wants to be able to get money through illicit means like credit card fraud, hustling pool, or conning people, etc.

Would it be worth coming up with a Stunt to let him use Deceit instead of Resources in certain situations? Or would this just be Resources with a specific flavour?

Personally I would make this a stunt for Criminal or Academics rather than deceit, but yeah using it with Deception if your group approves is completely legit (so to speak).

There is no Criminal skill, so Deceit seemed like the most logical choice.

So how does this look?

Hustle and Flow (Deceit)
You may use the Buying Things trapping of Resources (pg 139 YS) with your Deceit skill.

I think there's a stunt like that on the list, but I don't know for sure.

I've seen this stunt before, but it has a caveat that anything bought with it should have a "stolen" aspect attached to it so the GM can use it to complicate things occasionally ...  This probably won't be necessary if the character has an appropriate aspect on his sheet that would allow similar compels...

The character's High Concept is Fae Grifter, so I can compel that to get him in trouble with the law or shady people he's ripped off in the past. Or to have someone realise he's trying to hustle them or use a fake credit card.

They might have meant 'Burglary'.
Even Chaotic Neutral individuals have to apologize sometimes. But at least we don't have to mean it.

My player seems happy with the stunt. Thanks for the advice everyone!

They did, it's been a while since I've actually cracked the book, sorry.  I did make a character with a similar idea mechanically that I think I called Gas Station Withdrawal which allowed him to use Burglary as resources if he had a few hours notice.l

There's nothing exactly like that, but Five-Fingered Discount and My Buddy Has One Of Those come close.

I've heard it argued that the Buying Things trapping is especially powerful and so shouldn't be moved to a new skill with only one stunt. I've never been totally sure how true that argument is, but fortunately both of the stunts I just mentioned avoid that issue by mentioning that the difficulty might vary at the GM's discretion.
