Names help
« on: June 21, 2007, 02:44:26 PM »
Hey ive got this really evil, capital EVIL character, and I need a name for him.   Hes a demon, not top of the litter. Kinda on a similar level with succubus or incubus, able to act relativley freely, to prey upon mankind.  He eats souls, especially childrens.   quite strong, vaguely reptilian (raptor legs, rams horns, snake eyes that trail flame bat wings.)  Only problem is I cannot think of a name that will sufficiently convey him to the reader. NOt good with names this guy.

I'd suggest you look up some traditional demons, even just on Wikipedia. It should be fairly easy to find one with a reputation for eating kids, and I'm sure the name will be suitably terrible.  :)

Mr. Nice Guy

Satan's Evil Twin (or SET for short)

Shnookums

Didn't Baal eat children? Meh probablly doesn't have the right ring to it.

Something like Abdisur, or Barradus  maybe?

I always recommend not using actual demon names, unless you really do your research.  For a random demonic name it is easiest to simply take the name of a pet and reverse it:

My pets for an example:

Lynx = Xnyl
Oberon= Norebo
Sorcha= Ahcros (Ah Hic Ross)
Sophra= Arhpos (Ah Hip Pos)

Not exotic enough...?  Add in a few apostrophes or sub in y for i z for s or x for c and k, k for g.

You can come up with some great demon names from some rather mundane pets names, and not worry about irritating or summoning anything.

Spunky = Yx'nups

Spotty = Yt'topz

See?  An endless resource.

Hmm...I tried Blaze's advice (or Ezalb's) and my cat's name backwards sounds more like a hero:

Jade=Edaj

Or a background character in a fantasy world.

Didn't Baal eat children?

That was Molech.  Children were sacrificed to Molech by being thrown alive into a sacrificial fire (Jeremiah 33:35).

The Hebrew word for death/the underworld was Sheol, so Sheolech or Sheolek might work.

A Hebrew-English dictionary might be helpful. There are several online.  I turned up the following for "deadly" at http://www.eliyah.com/lexicon.html

akzar ak-zawr' from an unused root (apparently meaning to act harshly); violent; by implication deadly; also (in a good sense) brave:--cruel, fierce.

harag haw-rag' a primitive root; to smite with deadly intent:--destroy, out of hand, kill, murder(-er), put to (death), make (slaughter), slay(-er), X surely.

chalal khaw-lawl' from pierced (especially to death); figuratively, polluted:--kill, profane, slain (man), X slew, (deadly) wounded.

And for "infant," I got:

uwl ool  a babe:--sucking child, infant.
owlel o-lale' or lolal {o-lawl'}; from 5763; a suckling:--babe, (young) child, infant, little one.

So....Azkarul, Haragul, Ulchalal...?

Sameth's name would work better than his pets name!

Hetemaz.  (Htemas)

Ezalb  (Oh!  You could use thisone too, Ydalezalb.)

i am wretched at coming up with names.  i frequently hit my 12yr old daughter up for help in that department.  she seems to be a bottomless well of the things.

You can't use my name forward, though. It belongs to Mr. Garth Nix.
