What genre are you currently writing in?
« on: June 15, 2007, 09:34:37 PM »
Just out of curiosity. :)

I just finished a sci-fi piece and am currently working on one that, i guess, would be classified as more mainstream fiction/drama.

The new story is very much character-driven, about a single father, who grew up with an abusive/alcoholic home life. He now has to come to terms with his wife's death and re-adjust to his new life of raising his young daughter alone, while trying to avoid repeating the mistakes of his father when depression threatens to lead him toward drinking problems of his own.

Yeah... I'm having to do a lot of research on this one, as I myself grew up very much removed from anything remotely abusive and have the best dad ever. Of course, given that, I think all of this necessary research and character exploration is a good thing. ;)

My current baby is fantasy, but I have an urban fantasy waiting in the wings for when I've finished.

Modern fantasy, slipstream/new-weird. My first love is science fiction, but I'm far too picky about it to write it.  :-\
But I'm still right here,

Definately urban fantasy... or maybe suburban fantasy, since it's set by turns in Salem and outside of Lowell, Massachusetts.

An urban fantasy in a world recovering from a worldwide societal shift.

The majority of what I write Low Fantasy... once in a while I'll write some High Fantasy.

Heh, Bob... I used to write "satirical religious 'I'm going to hell for this fantasy"... it's always great fun isn't it?

Mainly I write in a third person perspective. The last story I wrote was in first person though, unfortunately my general suckiness with first person shone through... I'm planning on re-writing it in third person :P

My current monkey is fantasy / horror...King-esque and Koontz-ish people have called it.  Which, comparing myself to Stephen King is downright blasphemous.  But okay, I'll take the compliment. ;)

My latest story is a vampire story, based on the idea that everyone should try it at least once. That said, once it's done I plan on burying it in the last place anyone could ever find it. It's more of a learning experience. What have I learned? I don't like writing vampires. ;D
Our garden was debated territory between five local cats, and we'd heard that the best way to keep other cats out of the garden was to have one yourself. A moment's rational thought here will spot the slight flaw in this reasoning.      --Terry Pratchett

Reversible vamprisim as something to experiment with for a little while and see whether you like it ?  That has potential, though i suspect the story mode it would suit is sillier than anything I'm likely to get into.

kittensgame, Sandcastle Builder, Homestuck, Welcome to Night Vale, Civ III, lots of print genre SF, and old-school SATT gaming if I had the time.  Also Pandemic Legacy is the best game ever.

Two novels...one modern urban fantasy (action/noir/comedy with a MIB tilt), and one post-modern steampunk noir.

And they're set in the same universe.

currently co-authoring a sourcebook for an rpg with my husband. And you know what? It's a huge pain in the ass trying to work around history of the game world that you don't know about but some people assume you do. Also trying to build a language from random words someone years ago made up because they "sounded Elvish" and have no basis in linguistic reality.

Any other conlangers out there?

Fantasy. I have 2 stories going and am working on edits to another.  I can't stick too many irons in the fire or I get discombobulated.
