Last night wasn't a total waste.  I didn't get new words down, but I did re-work a story, changed it quite a bit, which was a nightmare.   :P

I do this all the time.  Write a story, then get a better idea and end up changing the darn thing or re-writing large chunks of it, which in itself is a good thing, I guess.  It's baby steps forward, though, and I end up with many unfinished stories.   :-\

Oh, I can't count the times I've done what you did.  Ugh.  I guess that's why having an outline helps, but I've never been that organized.   :(

This story I edited last night was an example.  I had to go back and explain something I'd said earlier, which I'd forgotten I said.  Luckily, that part didn't take much time.

Here's hoping we get to actually write new stuff now...

And good luck to you!

Heavens no!  You are by far not the only one who does this sort of thing.   ;)

Once I even had a character commenting about something that hadn't even happened yet in the story!  Argh.  I felt pretty stupid about that.  Thank goodness I found it and quickly fixed it.   :)

A number of the things I've written have needed chapters shifted about and rearranged as I've gone along, and keeping track of continuity in that context is a real nightmare.

I've done that-rearriangeing, redo, add stuff thing a time or three but usually not on the same level as you implied. It just has to be done at times.

Well, last night's work consisted of merging chapters 4 and 8 into a new chapter 4, which was easier than I had feared it would be, and moving what was chapter 7 to be chapter 5 and giving it a tighten.  So this issue's kind of on my mind at the moment.  (The underlying issue is that I have a book where the last half is OK, the first quarter is OK, and the bit from 25% to 50% of the way through really sags badly for two of the viewpoints.  The third viewpoint, which those two do not meet until well after the 50% mark, is good throughout, but in compressing the sag out and reshaping the chapters for the other two, I have to compress that thread too in order not to break my structure.)

I suppose this is the benefit of being an architect or outliner. Of all the problems or things I might have and might need to change in the re-write rearranging chapters has never been one of them and that sounds horribly painful.
