Summer Magic vs. Enchanted Item Question?
« on: April 21, 2011, 12:33:34 AM »
Hello all,

I was just thinking about an enchanted item that casts a maneuver to put the aspect Binding Vines on a zone?  Would this require summer magic, or do you get around that by using an enchanted item?

I was thinking something like an enchanted seed?  Yes, I am thinking Willow. . .

Depends on how you do it. Biomancy at the speed of evocation if you went with Summer Magic, perhaps. However using water you could manipulate the cells of the plant, letting you use it to tie someone up. There is an example spell that uses trees to attack, see how Yoshimo did that.
Don't make me drop a turkey on you...

I'd let you do it without Summer Magic or an enchanted item. Earth or Water would be appropriate. If you're using non-standard elements, then Wood is a no-brainer.

Really, this is just an maneuver like any other. I give a lot of leeway when it comes to describing the flavour of effects like this.

Enchanted items can do anything evocation or thaumaturgy can do, so you don't need thaumaturgy at evocation's speed and methods to work thaumaturgy instantaneously with enchanted items.

Secondly manipulating plants is a lot like manipulating lightning (see the box "Mommy, where does lightning come from?" on YS254). It could potentially fall under several different elements. Water for manipulating the liquid inside them, earth for it's thematic proximity to plants, air again for thematic proximity, and possibly even spirit for manipulating them by force if you want to stretch it. But just because it's not an element in and of itself doesn't mean you can't do it with evocation.

One of the sample Evocation spells in the book is to animate some trees and have them grapple your opponent.
