Since there had to be a 'first' to start the family line it follows that there must be a way to become a WCV.  What that is and whether or not a mortal could duplicate it is really a plot question.  Does it fit in your game?  How much trouble do you want it to be?  Darkhallow-style ritual or just a bargain with a demon?  Or perhaps its caused by a god's curse (Cain comes to mind).  What makes for the most interesting story in your game?

You may find this discussion about same to be worth a look.

That echoes on like it’s carpet-bombing feverish white jungles of thought
That I’m positive are not even mine"

Genetics: Some wizards tried the experimental crossing of such well-known subjects as fruit flies and sweat peas. Unfortunately, they didn't quite grasp the fundamentals, and the resultant offspring -- a sort of green thing that buzzed -- led a short, sad life before being eaten by a passing vegetarian spider.

:)
Now there's the inspiron for a doctor Moreau style N.P.C I wonder if I can find a park for him in Liverpool....
I would HATE to be a character in one of the stories I write -
and then there are the days when it looks too much like I AM!
