Liquid Luck potion

One of my real World PC wants to create a Luck Potion circa Harry Potter, mechanically it is an easy trick to pull just putting the aspect lucky or very lucky on the character but from what I can tell from the books something like this would be impossible, does anyone have any ideas what would be an appropriate alternative to a luck potions to fill her slot which will give her wide ranging open benefits?

Lore 5 creator, with +3 frequency, two invokes for a strength 9 potion.  That gives you 3 aspects on yourself per drink, and you can drink 4 times for a total of 12 aspects (each can be tagged once for free).  That looks pretty good to me.  Nothing wrong with "ridiculously lucky" as an aspect.  Indeed, given how it works in Harry Potter, I think you could even be compelled into a situation that looks bad initially, but is good in the long run (which gives you a fate point to use on your aspect to help keep things going).

Of course, the above requires a pretty skillful person to make.  That said, anyone can do this, with sufficient lore and the right aspects when creating the item.  With just Lore 4, you can put the frequency up to 5 uses, then invoke 3 aspects for a strength 6 effect (for 2 aspects placed per drink).


Hmm, looking over the potion rules, I am starting to think there's no technical upper limit to potion strength.  I'm going to track down the thread where people were talking about that.

Remember that power 3 only produces fragile aspects, if you want them to stick around, you have to up the cost for power 4.  I think the only real limit on potion strength is that your base strength can't be over (lore x 2) but I if your PCs seem to be abusing that, making the maximum (lore x 2) instead would also work.  But I'd think that a lack of spare fate points would limit how much you can jack up a potions strength.

Ahh, yeah.  Good point there.  You'd want one of them to be non-fragile or just accept that the luck wears out after they are tagged once each.

Or alternatively make the potion so that it produces a minor/major/severe consequence on the imbiber of "extremely lucky", "things are just going my way", etc. That way if the PC wants to use it they can spend fate points, if the GM wants to compel it it's there. And by definition it can last a long time. Downside is that the character has less consequences that they can suck up from other sources.

Consequences are not generally positive aspects, but I might not necessarily have a problem with that. Another thing to consider is that you're already using thaumaturgy as a base, it's only four or five shifts to increase the duration to a day.
