Alternatives to the aspect 'Hardened Warrior'
« on: July 07, 2010, 01:28:14 AM »
'Hardened warrior' generally implies someone who will always go for the kill.  This is not the case with my present character, so I need something that still implies martial prowess and commitment without the callousness.  It also needs to be general enough to serve as a self-compel, GM compel, or fate-spendable advantage.  A friend has suggested 'This Will Not Stand', but if anyone has other ideas I'd be very grateful.

Perhaps "Nothing Will Stop Me If I Choose to Act"

Oooh, that is nice, and very fitting.  This is a character who charged a dragon because something had to be tried even if there was little chance of winning, and that phrase would describe that attitude perfectly.

I've got a few sessions to decide, anyway.
It just seems important to differentiate, since the entire rest of the party used lethal force against confused semi-mortals using trank darts.  It seems like some kind of sign when the Norse woman thinks there's a little too much killing.

Can you describe the character a bit more?  Does he not kill at all?  Is he compassionate?  Merciful?  Does he believe in redemption?  Are ethics/The Good really important to him?

TVTROPES.org has a bunch of nice phrases for things.  I think one might work, but it is hard to tell without more information.

Beware the Nice Ones
Right Makes Might
Technical Pacifist or Martial Pacifist
Determinator

I think there are others I could dig up.  Be careful about going to the website though, it can eat hours of time if you are not prepared.

She will kill if the other person in the conflict is using lethal force against her, allies, or innocent bystanders without extenuating circumstances.  She is compassionate, though not always merciful; action paid is repaid in kind, regardless of begging.  Ethics and honor are intensely important personally, and even though she is a little harsh herself she can respect the strength that being merciful requires.

I've heard of TVTropes and will check it out.

I recommend thinking of characters in TV shows, comics, movies, etc that match your character in this respect.  Then look up those shows and check out the tropes.

Does she avoid physical conflict if at all possible and then kick ass if she must?

She doesn't avoid it, in fact it generally is her first reaction.  However, she always tries to make it a reasoned reaction, trying to make sure that it is only in kind and not excessive.

Strength in honor?

Hmm, perhaps one of the "Badass" tropes would fit.

'Strength in Honor' could also work.
I'll go look at the 'Badass' tropes, though I fear they might be a little overdone.  Still, I guess a Norse warrior type isn't exactly uncommon or original anyway, so one of those could be very appropriate.

I think: "Don't make me whoop your ass" works, because it sums up the idea of violence if necessary/provoked.

How about

"sow the wind, reap the whirlwind"

or maybe shorten it and just use

"sow the wind..."

It might even be something the character likes to say before attacking...
