Ask the GM if you can take your feather-fall spell as a rote, but rather than casting it with no control roll, you can cast it in response to a specific situation (like falling) and it either use a supplemental action or it take up your next full action.
Considering it's very specific use and it taking a rote slot, I'd say that'd be fair. I wouldn't allow it's use for an attack, but as a very specific defense it seems balanced to me.
