Rules question both magic and not, How do I Defenestrate?
« on: June 05, 2010, 04:46:19 AM »
So I plan on pitching one of my players out a window of a hotel with a particularly nasty warlock, how would I go about this?

I'm also curious how to do this with and without magic? and whether you can push someone into another zone or not?

Well, it strikes me as a Might Maneuver, or a similar spell-based one, opposed by Athletics with everything the victim's got. And the damage from falling is 5 stress per 10 feet of the fall.

I think grappling might've had something about moving your target.  Going from in one room and out a window sounds like transitioning zones.

As to "knockback" from other attacks.  Or the "trade in value" as it were.  It is hard to calculate because it is so potentially abusive.

Knocking an enemy from one zone to another is all fine and dandy when you are on a featureless plain.  But throw in a rooftop and suddenly you are talking about multistory drops.

I think the best way to handle it is from consequences and story agreement.  If the thing you are shooting has Physical Immunity to what you are doing, perhaps the stress you would've inflicted can be opposed by the target's might to knock them around.  Or if you hit a target sufficiently to force it to take a consequence, perhaps you can move the target up to 1 zone per 2 stress they reduced on the next attack.
If you have to ask, it probably breaks a Law of Magic.  You're just trying to get the Doom of Damocles.

Couple of ways; a standard Evocation Attack against your player's character and try to force a consequence of "out the window". Or an Evocation Maneuver against 3 shifts or against their Athletics skill if higher than Good to place the Aspect of "through the window" on the character.

As for how to do it without magic it would depend on how you did it to determine the skill you would use, Judo throw= Fists, Over the head hoist and heave= Might, Baseball bat swing or throwing something heavy at them= Weapons. If you want to just move them zones then you could roll your attack skill and use a -1 shift to move an opponent through a zone as some knockback provided the attack could conceivably do that.

In the end though it could also just come down to how you want to color the scene, if you just want to do an attack and damage and describe the character as getting blasted through the window go for it. Until you make it an Aspect it's all just color. I had a Wizard blast a Red Court Vampire on a yacht with a Force Blast attack that ended up doing something like 8 stress, I just described the blast as punching the Vampire right through the side of the boat and out into the sun taking it out. I didn't need to make Aspects because the Vampire was toasted anyway and it was a hell of an attack, so why not throw in some awesome color without worrying about mechanics too hard?
