That was parodied rather well some time ago by an author whose name I can't remember; the book was a sequel to
The Thin Woman, a fun murder mystery. The British husband and wife flew into New York and rented a car to drive to Chicago for a convention; their assumption that they would get there in an hour or so was proved disastrously wrong.
