Using personality disorders.
« on: April 22, 2008, 08:26:33 PM »
I've been writing about someone with a Multiple Personality Disorder (or whatever it's called now). The original character is the dominant personality, but she's the secondary one. (As in the second character was the personality she was born with). During the first character's (second personality) outings she got addicted to nicotine. My question is: does this affect the second personality, too? I was thinking it was about the chemicals more than the personalities themselves. So like when the second personality is out and about, she has withdrawls and doesn't know why.

Does anyone know if this is common? I'm trying to be as accurate as I can.

im not sure myself, but im with the way that the second personality would crave cigartets and have withdrawl symptoms, but not know WHY.

If this is supposed to be some serious project (a book, a short story which is going to be published) I would do some mroe in-depth research on the disorder anyway to get everything clear.

I'd think that mental addiction wouldn't be a problem but physical addiction & withdrawal might kick in. (not sure about the terminology here, English is not my native language and I'm tired. mental addiction?!)
I only read the British editions of Dresden Files, so I am half a year behind concerning the plot.
I also only read them when I travel.

It's a webcomic. I've touched lightly on the subject in one of my past strips, but I was wanting to find out in case I wanted to go more in depth with it.

I think you'll find that nicotine is highly physically addictive, with an insanely fast action, on the order of seconds.

I had a friend who wrote a series of mysteries back in the '90s featuring a detective with a drug addiction, and of course Sherlock Holmes became hooked on cocaine, as well as strong tobacco, but I don't recall reading anything about coping with multiple personalities. A lot more in depth research seems to be called for.

If s/he doesn't brush them regularly, that is.

I usually don't bother drawing the teeth half of the time, so it's no big deal.

Without magic, nicotine is a somatic addiction, so the cravings will be there for everyone.  that does not mean everyone will "feel" them the same.
Mildly OCD. Please do not troll.

kittensgame, Sandcastle Builder, Homestuck, Welcome to Night Vale, Civ III, lots of print genre SF, and old-school SATT gaming if I had the time.  Also Pandemic Legacy is the best game ever.

Yeah, the first character gets irritable and the second character gets the shakes.
