Enchanted Items that Grapple?
« on: April 13, 2011, 01:42:32 AM »
Hello all,

I was just trying to make sure that I understand the way this would work correctly?  With Lore 4, +2 power on crafting, & +1 on Frequency, I could make the following item and it would work the way I am interpreting it.

Item Slots:         4
Item Size:          Ring or larger
Targeting Skill:   Weaponry used to hit
Base Power:        6
Base Frequency:  2
Effect:                Block of 8 vs. all actions, and they take 1 stress per round
Duration:            3 Exchanges, or until broken?
Number of Uses:  2 per session

1) Do I get my normal action or am I going to have to spend it grappling for 3 turns?
2) Do I get to change it from doing damage to applying Maneuvers, or dragging them into a zone?
3) General opinions on the item?

normal action
no
that'll end a one-on-one fight twice/session (or more, by spending mental stress) against anything short of a Big Bad
Even Chaotic Neutral individuals have to apologize sometimes. But at least we don't have to mean it.

1) You'd get your normal action.
2) Since enchanted items are supposed to have somewhat narrow effects, I'd say no.  You can grapple, but you don't have the control of ju-jitsu.
3) Very powerful.

EDIT: Okay, I reread it and realized that I was wrong.  You can allocate shifts to duration.  My bad.

If you up the duration of blocks they will carry on until the duration ends or the block is pierced so tecnically if you treat a magical grapple the same way as any other type of magical block then you have normal actions in all subsquent rounds after casting. Magic Grapples are very heavily debated especially area of effect grapples but their is no reason to believe that one type of magical block works any differently from all the other types, the whole point of having duration for a spell is that you don't have to renew it every round. In terms of blocks being too powerful one weakness of blocks is strength powers which give massive bonuses to breaking anything inanimate including in my opinion grapples and blocks.

Every night has its day.
Even forever must come to an end....
I think.

Except a grapple is a type of block that works differently than all other types of block. So there is reason to believe a magic grapple works differently than other magic blocks.
