Can a Knight of the Cross learn this???
« on: November 21, 2010, 08:05:16 PM »
Hey, I was talking to some friends about a possible change for a character that I am playing.  I am currently the Summer Knight but I had a destiny to pick up a Sword of the Cross.  So if very certain things happen, one of them being dying in a truly selfless way he has the possibility of being brought back by the Holy Host as a Champion of God, losing his mantle.  The only drawback is the sudden loss of magic.  Not a huge deal but a little sad since I was built to be a heavy caster as well as melee combatant.  My initial thought was to replace Seelie Magic with Soulfire.  Other people thought that I could be taught just regular magic as per a focused practitioner.  So what do you guys think?  Would it be appropriate for a Knight of the Cross to be able to learn Evocation?  What about Soulfire, does the fact that it is still sponsored restrict a Sword-bearer's actions (my thought was that the Soulfire and the Sword kind of come from the same source and the Soulfire is just filling in a gap that was left from having the Mantle ripped away)?

Yeah, you can totally just use normal magic. Any knight could; as far as i remember nothing has ever kept them from learning it. You can even use your previous experience with magic as justification for why you know about it.

Alternatively, you could pick up soulfire. Yes, your magic must be used in support of your patron's wishes, and as Capital G hasn't been written up yet or a motive defined, it's really up to your GM and you.   In my games, the character with soulfire couldn't heal a fey, and can't use magic in a way that would break the laws, period, or would violate someone else's (mortals only) free will.

Thanks!  I wasn't sure if a knight of the cross could have supernatural stuff or if they could just use faith based abilities.

By the template they don't, but what really matters is the story. Templates are just a starting point anyway.

You could also start off by only having Ritual and Channeling, to represent that you only had access to a limited form of magic, but that some of the lessons stuck with you. You could keep the theme of Winter magic for Ritual, and maybe take wind for Channeling. Or if you wanted to move completely into Champion of God mode, you could take Spirit for your Channeling, and for Ritual take either spirit or something like exorcism or healing. You could always buy your way into full magic later on if you wanted to.
Moo!

I was thinking about coloring his style very heavily with a holy flavor, using a lot of spirit and exorcism and such.  Thanks for all the suggestions!

Well, for the very holy feeling, Sponsored Magic (Soulfire), and just include said stuff as part of it.  In fact, there is no reason you *couldn't* do that as it leaves the thaumaturgical application of Soulfire blank.
