Thank you everyone for all of the suggestions. I have many more ideas than I did before.

I like the idea of a master poker player wizard who uses evocation and the such to shift the dice and is very good at deceiving people.

Should I worry about resources at all to be able to have access to a library or is there a better mechanic that could help with that?

I will post more on here as I create him.

He wouldn't need only significant milestones.  One or two minor milestones is all someone needs to shuffle their skills around.  Buying the rest of the template powers can be done at will, assuming the refresh is available.

I'd say he's a wizard in a party, so he SHOULD be focused on magic. That's his job as a wizard, to be as good and flexible with magic as he can be, unless he's in a party with other wizards/practitioners.

Focus items-- enchanted pool queue instead of a staff. Lucky metal dice as an earring, bracelet, or necklace pendant for earth magics. The first $1k chip he ever won, from a casino that doesn't exist anymore (preferably if it was blown up or demolished, too) for Entropy spells. Green felt Roulette mat as the focus for a lot of his Thaumaturgy spells.
