Author Craft / Re: New Storyline... authors wanted
« on: July 03, 2009, 08:15:54 AM »
What was really eerie was the voice sounded....wrong.  Not male or female, but an odd mixture of both.  It sent shivers down his spine. Suddenly, he wanted to be anywhere, but here.  "I don't feel like playing, thanks anyhow."  He hoped being polite would count in his favor, but doubted it.

The wind picked up, dust and trash whirled around him.  A dim shape could just about be made out at the edge of the abandoned playground....

Author Craft / Re: Chapter Titles yes or no?

I recently started reading the Alex Rider series that makes good use of Chapter Titles.  The first book is called "Stormbreaker" and written by Anthony Horowitz.  Think Jr. James Bond type if he didn't volunteer, but was more or less blackmailed into working for Queen and Country.  Good stuff.  :)

DF TV Series / Re: POLL: End Game Opinion of the Series

Overall, I thought the show had potential.  My main problem with Bob wasn't so much that they turned him into a ghost, but it seemed like the actor was channeling Tim Curry most of the time.  Not necessarily a bad thing, but it made me wish Tim Curry was playing Bob.  sigh.  I'm sorry that there won't be a season two.

I would be weirded out if my plot became a reality, but wouldn't feel responsible.  Or I hope I wouldn't.  The guilt would be on the person who did the actual deed.  Some much stuff gets blamed on any media (including the news) that defense lawyers seem to have an easier time of it.  I hope this made sense and was of some help.

Great article, thanks for letting us know about the update.   ;D  I liked how Jim gave an example from Dead Beat.

So far I've been doing the separate file for each chapter, but they go into my "writing" folder.  Inside the writing folder there are subfolders.  Subfolder categories: Short stories, poems, novels in progress, etc.  It may not be the right way to go for everyone, but I like it.   ;)

Not sure this really fits the category, but I recently was reading one of Glen Cook's Garrett Files and loved it when Garrett described Tinnie Tate as a "professional redhead".  It just tickled me.  Ok, tickle is a good word.  So is askew.   (That just popped into my head.)  Anyway, I'm going on very little sleep so I hope this made sense.

My name is Shelley and I have been writing and/or telling stories since I can remember.  What I'm working on now, I hope to get published one day.  Mostly I want to see how the story ends.  It's a pretty straight forward private eye mystery.  My detective used to be a cop, but got badly burned out and decided to go the private eye route.  I'm not very nice to him.  Instead of the sexy secretary, in his first case, I have saddled him with his older bossy sister.  Just until he "gets established."  Insert evil author laughter.  ;)

Anyway, my guy Nick might have dreamed about being a lone wolf investigator, but he comes from a large family which won't let him.  His family and some friends who won't cut him any slack, that is.  On the plus side, he does have a sultry redhead as a girlfriend so I'm not being entirely harsh to my hero.  The story I'm writing is about Nick's first case.  A simple missing person case that turns deadly.  It's been a lot of fun to write and I'm hoping someday to be bugging people to be test readers.  :)

Author Craft / Re: Beginnings
« on: July 20, 2006, 05:56:48 AM »
A great first line, paragraph, and/or chapter is wonderful, but the rest of the story has to follow through.  Jim's books consistently do this.  I thought maybe I missed a story at the beginning of Grave Peril as well, but it didn't take long to figure out, "Oh, we're joining a story already in progress".

I have read some books (drawing a blank now) that the first few chapters were great and then somewhere in the middle it's as if the plot went out the window and the writer was just churning out so many pages to fulfill a contract.  It's like seeing a trailer of a movie thinking, "That will be so cool!  Can't wait till it comes out" then to discover while sitting through it-the trailer had a the best bits.  Know what I mean?

Anyway, thanks Jim for being a wonderful storyteller!   :D Shelley

Author Craft / Re: In Line With Outlines?
« on: July 20, 2006, 05:42:16 AM »
Try working with an outline-if it works for you great, if not, at least you'll know.  Getting it down on paper or computer screen is the important thing.  Whatever tool that helps get that done you'll have to be the final judge of.  I do a combination of notes, vague outline and seeing where the story takes me.  Then again, I'm still working on a couple stories so take what I'm saying with a grain of salt.   ;)  Shelley

I think I'd be a mortal like Murphy.  Involved through knowing someone like Harry and not because of magical ability.

Thanks, Darla!  Haven't had a chance to pick up the book yet.  Excerpt was great to read.  Happiness is a Jim Butcher story!

Serendipity-like the concept, the word is just fun (for me) to say and yet I never really get to use it.

Names I like:  Walla Walla, WA  and Armand Assante.   :)  Shelley
