Calendar Event Discussion / Re: Signing in Dayton, OH, 7/29

Really great place for signings. The Turn Coat signing was ran well. The staff is high quality too.
Be warned, the coffee bar is now a smoothie bar from what I've been told.

If your group wouldn't mind a visitor, I would like to stop by for a session.

DFRPG / looking for a game to visit
« on: November 24, 2010, 12:23:28 AM »
I live in the sticks-kinda. Small town and all that...the owner of my apartment building also farms 5,000 acres, etc...
I live about half-way between Dayton OH and Fort Wayne IN and would like to find a game in Cincinnati, Columbus, Toledo, or Indianapolis that I could stop by and visit for a session. I have some blank spots on mechanics that I think would be helped by observing some actual gameplay.
If anyone lives in or hear these cities, and wouldn't mind having a newb stop by for a session, please let me know! :D

DFRPG / Re: Would a frat house have a threshold?
« on: November 23, 2010, 02:16:42 AM »
If it is the right kind of frat, then yes, a house can have a threshold.
Let's look at Revenge of the Nerds. The Alpha's original house would not have a threshold, but the Lambda house would. There was a real sense of brotherhood there. These guys would do anything for each other. Sure, there are arguments, resentments, and what not, but it is like that with any other family.
To paraphrase Harry re: Morgan: "He might have been an A-hole, but he was our A-hole.
Also, keep in mind, that a lot of frats use several rites, rituals, and ceremonies during the course of a year. I'm not talking about the "Thank you Sir, may I have another" stuff from Animal House, but based on old and well-respected rites such as
(click to show/hide)
. A lot of "secret societies" look to ancient texts, or what was saved from them, as a basis of their degrees, passages, etc... There could be real power in those rites.

Really, it's just a game and if it helps the story, then have at it!

Also, I wouldn't rule out any state/national parks or other areas of interest. An excellent example (in Japan) would be Aokigahara http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aokigahara.

Where I grew up, the Buffalo National River and surrounding Boston Mountains http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffalo_National_River is close to an metro area of 350k plus people. Rugged terrain and lots of history. Oh, and big 500 foot cliffs for dramatic moments.

Look to local folklore. I have a book "Ozark Tales and Superstitions" that could give some very rich back-story or plot points in that area as well. It turns out the ghost at the cemetery on State 45 was a widow visiting her husbands grave, but focus on the juicy bits.

Where I live now, Heuston Woods http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/parks/parks/huestonw/tabid/745/Default.aspx is real, true old growth forest within an hour drive. Everything else has been cleared for farmland for two, three hundred years.

Are there any local stories about grisly crimes?

The area you want to use was populated by mound builders. Two different societies, on each side of the river. What really were those mounds for? Use that.

Look to the past if you need ideas.

Sooo if my fists are +2 and I say knock thug 1 down with a difficulty of +2 (taking the -1 penalty to declare that shift ahead of time) and I roll a +2, I can use that shift to "untouched thug 2 drops gun in surprise"  --(totally Batman) or is it limited to the same target?

TOTAL RPG n00b here...sorry

;D I forgot about Black Pete! Thank you!

BTW, 2nd favorite Carlos quote as your avatar... #1 is "Ow. Ow. OW! It hurts to be this good!"

And the Erlking's existence implies that of other, similar, Fae who might also have their own champions of one sort or another.

Exactly! Maybe Santa Claus needs someone to "take care of" the Naughty!

(OK, I am one REALLY disturbed individual.)

And also remember the Erlking. He's on par(ish) with Mab....maybe he needs a new mortal hunt-master

Oh, thank YOU Evil Hat folks! If ferromantic games (of the video kind) were as up front and honest and didn't rush things into publication and delivered great product (will I ever see my $20 preorder for Duke Nukem Forever pay off?) as you guys.....
