My gut reaction is that this is a different universe. Jim has said we might revisit Alera at some point, but this doesn't feel like that.

They might be slightly more difficult to aim... but I'm not sure if that difference is substantial enough to invalidate the idea.
From what little we have seen, the airships are closer to their namesake naval capital ships than dogfighting fighters. They can vary altitudes but they aren't turning on a dime or rising at ridiculous speeds. Ships (and their guns) appear to need a reasonably close proximity to their target which means that cannons might very well be an interesting 1-2 punch. Use the ethereal cannons to force the opposing ship into a position and then put a half dozen 12lb cannon balls into it's side.
The key value add of the ethereal cannons seems to be the sheer destructive power of them. Normal cannons are basically just heavy balls of metal (though exploding ones do exist)... E-cannons appear to be more along the lines of high-explosive shells that cause massive damage on a penetrating hit.

"Spidery" is Jim's usual adjective for a character that's deadly, graceful, and competent but the reader is supposed to be creeped out instead of impressed by the character. The same thing happens for the Vord queen and for Mavra.
I believe there is a specific quote that says he moves like a Silkweaver... not a Cat. So it is at least implied that there might be different styles of Warriorborn... or someone is mucking about with the designs.

I got a big "Auri" vibe from Folly.
She's a thin waif of a girl who is more knowledgeable/powerful than outside appearances indicate.

There is at least some potential that WE (being modern humans) are the Builders. That's why language puns like that exist...
Of course that would make Cinder Spires set in a massive post-apocalypse scenario where much of technology was lost... which isn't unreasonable I suppose.

I like it, good solid theory. We know Harry is walking a little close to the edge of sanity anyway, and we know that his ID is nothing to scoff at.
