Vindication awoke hungover, disgruntled and proceeded to emasculate another abbreviated newsclip.  Exasperated with tiresome drivel constantly quoting

I'm with Theta on stuff like:

Quote
Instead of "I felt his cock" it turns into "I felt him."

However I write a lot of what could be considered fetish (not porn, not even sex) and that does involve a lot of where the rope goes and how deep it cuts and an awful lot of synonyms for 'flesh'. Some would say it is graphic because it's descriptive. I could say 'he tied her up' but there are just so many ways of doing that to a person. Can she reach the phone? Can she scratch that really irritating itch on the end of her nose?

When I want her to feel fear, I don't want to tell you she's scared, I want you to just know, simply from her reaction. Make your own mind up how she feels. I don't write in the first person so I can't asy for sure myself.

Rather, I go by the rule of: could I possibly persuade one of my workmates (ok maybe one of my more imaginative workmates) to read this without cringing, or would it simply look better sat next to Deep Throat?

Author Craft / Re: Giving books away free - Gaiman online this month

I love the concept of free books - I practically live at my library. If I had had to buy every book I'd ever read, I'd owe more money than Northern Rock right now.

Sites offering payment-free stories and books are just the current generation's answer to libraries. I don't believe they will ever take away a person's desire to own a physical copy of a book - there is something rather wonderful about packing away in your suitcase that motheaten, dogeared copy you must have read a thousand times, safe in the knowledge when you return it will be a thousand-and-one. It's also a bit uncomfortable taking your laptop to bed for a bit of late night reading.

You may not like every author of every free story, book or excerpt you ever read, but there will be some who read them who would not otherwise have had the opportunity, who fall in love with the characters and become dedicated fans.

I found the Dresden books thanks to my local library, and have gone on to buy the whole series despite having already read most of them for free.

Personally, I find reading short stories on the internet easier than trying to read books but that's probably down to the time I spend doing other things on my computer.

Author Craft / Re: Who uses novel writing software?

I use one by GSP called Novel Writer (Standard version). I'm a relly sporadic writer, and this allows me to create backstories for each of my characters and leave strategic links mid-story to the backstories. It also has sections for notes and ideas, and an events module which tracks your story like a gantt chart. I find this helps me not to do stupid things with the timing of my story, which I'm otherwise apt to do.

If you want some fun, it has a storyline generator, which I use to make my OH laugh but I don't think I would use it for my 'real' story.

I looked at buying the super duper jumped up version but couldn't see it was going to offer me more (it would store up to 25,000 characters, compared to the 8,000 or so that the standard version stores).

I like the format of it, it exports nicely into Word etc, and you can program how you want the export to look, including generating a front page with wordcount etc.

No, I don't work for them, just happen to find it comfortable to use :)

I picked it up for £3 at a supermarket, but up until then had been more than happy with Word. I could probably go back to Word quite happily if the need arose. I don't know how compatible it is with Windows Vista, if anyone has that - the blurb only states compatibility with Windows 98/Me/2000/XP. Says nothing about Macs.
