DFRPG / Re: Statting a magic sword
« on: July 30, 2010, 06:12:08 PM »
Could you link to that Q&A?  That answer seems a little bit off.  An aspect about always having a sword makes sense, but an aspect about having a magic spirit sword would need to be tied to a power in my opinion.  Otherwise, I could just replicate claws and breath weapon and a few other powers by simply having an aspect.  Recall that to have a power in the first place, it needs to be justified by an aspect.
If you had Spirit Sword as an aspect, I'd probably expect a fate point to summon it (tag for effect), if you buy it as a power you won't.  It seems to me to be a pretty fair trade.

All fine advices!

Thanks all...

But I am also concerned on how to prepare my gaming material...physically!

How do you do it? Do you get in front your players with only a few scribbles on a sheet of paper or do you have a full fledge documents with described scenes, NPC stats, "what if" scenarios and such?
This is something that varies from person to person.  From what I've seen starting out you'll want to prep a lot. Statted NPC's, locations and scenarios planned out.  Then you'll see that players never do what you expect.  This is ok.  Statting up NPCs and scenarios is good practice for when you have to come up with a response to something you don't expect, like one of the PCs picking a fight with someone you haven't statted.  Your players will help you if you ask them.  I always ask my players what they are planning to do next session and prep that, if they change their minds I'll wing it, but it helps.

Honestly seems to fit with a Troll.
if only there was a way to be a changelling Troll, without you know ending up turning into a Troll.

I made a character based on exactly that.
High concept: Troll blooded art student
Trouble: I don't want to be a troll

If the character is forced to make the choice he'll choose mortal, but until then he'll enjoy helping others with his powers.  He is also hoping to find another choice (become a knight, become an alpha, etc.) before being forced to make THE choice.

My suggestion write up the rotes you want with no fluff.  Get them approved, then ask for the shadow trappings.  Anything weird that you don't think the mechanics covers had with aspects.

Take an aspect like "Unexpected shadowy techniques" which you can invoke to use said techniques, but they can tag as being wise to your ways.

If it exists pc's will find a way to get it, and use it.
Then they will have the converse problem.  They won't have the lawbreaker stunt but WILL have wardens on their ass.
Alternatively, there may be locations that have these properties, which would be somewhat less abusable.

DFRPG / Re: Sponsored magic

What would you suggest for having sponsor debt of non-evocation/thaumaturgy powers?

I'm thinking someone ridden by a Loa looks like the lycanthrope template, but the loa doesn't always come when you invite it, but you can invite it any time.  They may opt out, or give you debt.

So how would Sponsored Modular abilities or shapeshifting look?

With this idea, the Cop could sport the enchanted item under his own slots.
To them, I would call it an item of power that had refinement slots on it.

DFRPG / Re: Some Thaumaturgical Questions
« on: April 22, 2010, 06:53:38 PM »
After further consideration, the Wizard who uses multiple Small Binding Rituals will live saver than the One with the big hammer Ritual.

Extreme consequences will stay until an Major Milestone. How often does a Demon get an Major Milestone?
I think thats an angry Demon...

Yeah the binding ritual seems over the top for me.  It seems like the bind to answer questions truthfully, and the bind to serve the caster for all time are the same difficulty, but one the target is more likely to concede to than the other.

I've got a related question, was there even a binding ritual when Harry summoned Toot in Storm Front?

Ok I need some help here people. I am looking for a good high concept name for a thief from a lower class background that enjoys the finer things in life and pretends to be from a much higher social class. I feel like there is a word for pretending to be from a higher social class but i can't think of what it is.
Stolen Blue Blood
High class conman
Thief above his station

« on: April 13, 2010, 04:45:33 PM »
Is it 3 shifts to get a sticky aspect on yourself?

Let's say I bend light to make myself appear 6 inches to the left, and I model it by an aspect "No to the left", or "Not where I appear"

Is that the right way to do it?

Could you model it as an athletics boost instead, saving fate points but having much lower duration?

DFRPG / Re: Veils - Duration
« on: April 12, 2010, 10:46:08 PM »
I'd say in general its thaumaturgy. A ritual with complexity less than your lore, you can throw together with things you have on you.  If the complexity is less or equal to your conviction and discipline, you can likely pull it off in one exchange and have it last for a scene.  Only reason I hesitate is Molly as statted doesn't have full thaumaturgy yet, and I'm not sure where in the timeline this effect falls vs. her advancement.

What's the duration for something like a veil?

Veil Coat (Superb lore)
+5 block vs. perception
1/session
1 slot
but for how long?

I was modeling off Thaumaturgy and figure it's one scene per session, but based on this I'm thinking it only lasts until someone tries to see through it?

So when can we preorder?  I was waiting for power/control details of the magic system, but this just sold me.  I want it because it's pretty.

Please tell me y'all do a find for "XX" before sending it to the printer.  White Wolf has given me a serious pet peeve on this.

Rolf Gunnarson

High Concept Well dressed wizard

conflict family duty vs. ?  (please make suggestions I don't know how to word it)
Basically his conflict is between bombing the test and shaming his family, and being involved in the war that killed his parents.

The beginning: Vanir's Blood
Rolf Gunnarson comes from a long line of wizards who claim godly blood back in the dark and misty.  Every family member who has sought magical training has become a full fledged wizard.  He grew up in a magical household, meeting wizards and other supernatural sorts.

Growing up: Wardens' orphan
When the war with red court started,  his father was asked to become a warden.  When his father fell in battle, his mother took up the grey cloak.  Now without both parents, he is continuing his magic training with his uncle.

The first novel:  Rolf Gunnarson and the contracts of old
Aspect :  Every word a weapon.
Still an apprentice, Rolf is forced to action when a changeling friend disappears.  Not able to rely on the White Council, he leans on his family, not only the living but the pacts formed long before he was born.  He quickly find out that not all the pacts his ancestors made were for their ancestors benefit.  Only through extreme care and knowledge of the old ways is he able to guarantee his friends unfettered choice.
