DFRPG / Mimic Form and others shapeshifting powers
« on: March 21, 2015, 02:35:39 AM »
Shapeshifting has always been one of my favorite powers. I often play a druid in D&D,  a Lunar in Exalted  or a Gangrel in Vampire.
So naturally, the Changeling character I'm building will  be a shapeshifter.
I'm now hesitating between taking a  combination of Glamour + Modular Abilities and Mimic Form + Modular Abilities/Mimic Abilities.
I'd like to know a few things before choosing, though:

What shapes can Mimic Form allows one to shift into? Human? Supernatural creatures? Animals?  If my character manages to get a hold of a vampire's blood, a dragon's scales or a tiger's hair, will she be able to take their appearance?
If she takes the form of an individual of another gender, will she gain their reproductive abilities?

How hard is it to see through a Glamour?

I think a classical breath weapon would probably be closer to a garden hose's stream of water than to a gun's blast.
Also, D&D isn't exactly the game with the best or more realistic mechanics.

Old Question, basically the answer is ask your gm what he feels comfortable with. Its not a particularly powerful power (2 refresh for a hidden pistol) without allowing it a little extra utility though.
OK, thanks.

DFRPG / Breath Weapon questions

Can Strength enhancements add to the damage caused by the Breath Weapon power?
Can Breath Weapon count as a weapon when it come to defense?

Sarissa also used a iron weapon in Cold Days.

Sure. Not per RAW, but as long as it's ok with the rest of your group there's nothing speaking against it. I would allow it, if it fits the character. Though there might be other ways to model this, depending on what parts of the magic the character is supposed to have. Breath Weapon (Summer Fire), Glamor, things like that.
The decay and slumber aspects of Unseelie Magic and the growth and renewal aspects of Seelie Magic are tough to model with other power, though.

I can do Armstrong.

I'd need a description of the other two, though. I know a few things about them through osmosis, but not enough for a statblock. And I'd rather not have to do research.
Emiya Shirou is a kind, brave and serious young man who happen to have been adopted and raised by a mage. He originally has little talent for magic himself, apart from the ability to analyze and strengthen objects. He finds himself invovled in a war between mages for the possession of the Graal, waged with the help of summoned heroic spirits. He manages to summon the most powerful of those spirits, Saber, but his lack of talent for magic cripples her power, and his sexism/chivalry makes him try to fight instead of her, getting them both in trouble. Quantuse gave an excellent description of his powers.

Nanoha Takamichi, is the last child of a family of martial artists, who as a little girl, finds herself charged to collect dangerous magical jewels by a wounded mage transformed into a ferret. She's given a sentient magical staff which gives her the power to fly, summon a protective garment called a Barrier Jacket and create extremely powerful magic blasts, missiles and shields. She demonstrates surprising skill and power in battle, as well as a keen sense for tactics. She is famous for befriending her adversaries after defeating them, often with overwhelming power.
She grows up to become a magical combat instructor, so powerful that she has to wear a power limiter outside of critical situations.

I was wondering: is it possible to take Channeling/Rituals (Seelie/Unseelie)? Basically, half of the Seelie/Unseelie Magic power?

DFRPG / Questions about Spellcasting and Changelings
« on: March 01, 2015, 07:35:39 PM »
Hello, I'm now trying to build a character (some kind of changeling mystic, with a more oriental flavor rather than using the usual british/celtic inspiration)  and I have some questions I'd like to have a few clarifications on a few points, before deciding what kind of powers I'd like her (or him, I'm still not sure) to have.

I was wondering if a changeling could use Evocation or Channeling and Thamaturgy or Rituals, or if they had to take Seelie/Unseelie Magic? Can changelings naturally acquire the use of Seelie/Unseelie Magic, or does it have to be granted by one of the Queens?

Also, does a Channeling/Rituals dedicated to the spirit element allow for both telekinetic (blunt) and psychic (subtle) effects or just one of the two?

I know that regarding the Accords, Changelings depend from the Court of their Faerie parent, but what if they can learn mortal magic? Do they suffer from breaking the Laws of Magic? Are they considered mortals for the purpose of summoning demons and Outsiders?

Finally, I'd like to know if Glamour is only about illusions or also about other kinds of effects; the write-up for Jenny Greenteeth seems to suggest there is some sort of overlap or redundancy with Incite Emotions, as does Harry's accusations the first time he met her at Maeve's place. Is it a mistake, or perhaps just that all Fae magic is refered to as glamour in the fluff?

DFRPG / Re: Modular Abilites and Catch
« on: March 01, 2015, 06:52:59 PM »
Not sure I understand the question but A toughness power has to always cost 1 refresh.

So, if you have 2 points to assign in modular abilities, and you take inhuman toughness, with a catch of +3, toughness is still going to cost 1 refresh - despite the rebate.  But it means you might as well take supernatural toughness instead (or an inhuman toughness recovery combo)

So  your character might look like this:
-6 modular abilities (-2 base)
    -4 form points

Bear form:
-4 Supernatural toughness
+3 catch: Weapon 3 weapons or higher.
-2 inhuman strength
-1 Echoes of the beast

Edit:  you should be careful about taking multiple catches.  Check with your GM.  Being able to switch forms and catches might be too powerful since you could switch forms if someone finds your catch mid-combat.   Generally, you take a universal catch, I think.
Thank you, that's exactly what I wanted to know!

Thanks for the answer!
Would the refresh discount be limited by the number of form points that can be dedicated to Toughness powers or by the refresh cost of the Modular Abilities power?

Hello, I'm new to the game and I'd like to know if it is possible to apply a Catch to the Modular Abilities power, given that this power can be used to gain Toughness and Recovery powers.
