... that would be a nice surprise for Harry.

Harry didn't get nice surprises like that.

DF Spoilers / Re: Who broke Little Chicago?
« on: February 01, 2021, 07:44:30 PM »
I remember doing an intense reread of Proven Guilty to try and determine what exactly happened in that book without referring to other books in the series. And the most obvious answer for who fixed Little Chicago is...

Harry himself. I submit that Harry at some point gets unstuck in time. He skirts the no time travel law by mentally time traveling, a la Billy Pilgrim from Slaughterhouse Five or Desmond from Lost.

Early in the novel, Harry makes a big deal about how realistic Lash's illusions are, and then promptly gets hit by a mysterious car. This was an illusion because Future Harry made an ally of Lash, and they used the ensuing concussion to hide Future Harry as a ridealong in PG Harry's skull.

Bob and Harry also discuss time travel at length because of the future info that Rashid passes on to Harry. We never find out what this future info is it anything about it. I suspect this is also Future Harry ensuring that PG happens the way it's supposed to.

Finally, Little Chicago. Future Harry fixed it. Any questions?

I don't believe the Librarians will be villains. Antagonists, sure.

They'll also fill a niche now that Harry probably has the Chicago PD too scared to pose much of a threat.

DF Spoilers / Twelve Months, first and last chapters
« on: January 06, 2021, 04:50:13 PM »
I think it almost HAS to go like this: we open on Harry getting dressed on his wedding day. He's in the bathroom, shaving. Looking in the mirror.

I'd love for the narration to include: "Yep, that's me. I bet you're all wondering how I got here."

And then we go through the twelve months that got Harry through the year since the Battle of the Bean. Maybe the wrestling case takes place around the therapy and fallout.

And then, in the final chapter, we catch up to Harry in the bathroom on his wedding day. And that's when Mirror Harry makes his move.

I honestly don't see any other way this book can go.

DF Spoilers / Updated Road Map (BG spoilers and 12M speculation)
« on: January 06, 2021, 04:56:30 AM »
Once when the forum was younger iposited a connection between the first half and second half of the case files. At the time we'd just had Skin Game come out and the similarities were astounding.

Books 1 and 11: Harry Dresden fights an evil wizard doing black magic.
Books 2 and 12: Harry Dresden takes on a dark mantle to fight above his weight class.
Books 3 and 13: Harry Dresden mucks about with his own death to fight a super ghost.
Books 4 and 14: Harry Dresden fights a crazy fairy princess.
Books 5 and 15: Nicodemus tries to steal a holy relic connected to Christ.

So... How does my prediction, that we'd get more from Laura and Mavra, pan out for Book 16?

Quite well if you count Battle Ground as part 2 of Peace Talks!

So what of Book 17 (Twelve Months?)? Jim says it still deal with the fallout from BG... So my prediction?

After a traumatic White Council loss, Harry faces off against Cowl and other necromancers. It's practically set up for us: this time, instead of an offscreen ghoul attack, it's the Black Court skirmish from BG (complete with vampire Chandler). And the Black Court are necromancers, apparently!

So far so good! (Though I wonder what happened to the wrestling book...)

Ok. I got it. An unimpeachable choice.

Marsai Martin for Ivy.

Michelle Yeoh for Mai.

Marc Evan Jackson for Chandler. A Yank, but I think he has the proper demeanor.

Josh Brolin as Marcone.

And I stand by Lena Headley as both Mab and Titania.

Marcone wanted Dresden to work for him, and it didn't work out.  He eventually got Gard.  As talented as she is, she still isn't a wizard who has access to different forms of power.  Do you think that Marcone may have a wizard on his payroll?  If so, who?  I'm wondering if Elaine could be.

He does have a wizard on his payroll. Known for a wide-brimmed pointed hat, a beard, even an eye patch.

Good by the name Vaderrung.

He did open up reality, that's how he became the gatekeeper.

... Citation needed.

Yea and the father of the previous GK was Dante Alighieri and that was wrote in... what 1300's and yet GK was around for thousands of years before that... So something is a Little Fishy over here too Black Cat guys...
(click to show/hide)

Or Rashid wasn't the Gatekeeper when he took out Abd'Al-Hazred. Or Alighieri is older than we think because of the slow path. Or Abd'Al-Hazred lived longer than we thought after writing the Necronomicon. Or any number of other explanations.

Lots of stretches to make Gatekeeper Rashid into Nyarlathotep.

Not too big of a stretch to make him a Walker-- am avatar of an Outsider in this reality causing mischief?

Nyarlathotep would open the gate on a whim. For a laugh.

Also, Gatekeeper if officially the guy who killed Abdul Alhazred (which, um, the proper name would be Abd'Al-Hazred).

Cthulhu's not a god though, he's a priest thereof.  He's a Great Old One.

He's worshipped as a god by mortals and that's pretty much the definition of a good in this fantasy series.

Edit: if you want to get TECHNICAL, none of the Lovecraft gods are anything more than super powerful alien beings beyond mortal ken. Azathoth is literally the chaos at the universe's nucleus.

Why would a Walker be Nyarlathotep?  Nyarlathotep is supposed to be the closest when it comes to being able to relate to humans.  Why wouldn't that be Drakul, who's trapped in a mortal form?

... Nyarlathotep isn't mortal. He's the most personable, but he's not mortal. He's canonically the devil that the Salem witches got their powers from (Dreams in the Witch House), the custodian of the gods in unknown Kadath in the Dreamlands (The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath), and a techno-cult leader based on Tesla (Nyarlathotep).

When he shows up, it's usually to have fun with the mortals.

...

Only five?

We got Cthulhu. Azathoth. Yog-Sothoth. The Goat With The Thousand Young. Nyarlathotep (it's not clear whether he's a messenger or avatar of Azathoth, but he's clearly a separate entity). Hastur (though he's little more than a name). Mother Hydra and Father Dagon (though it's unclear whether either of these is Cthulhu). Magna Mater gets a mention in Rats in the Walls (you might know her better as Our Lady Underground from The Magicians or Joseph Campbell's cheekily named Our Lady of Mammoths or the Stone Age Venus figures). Lilith shows up in Horror at Red Hook, but she could be a Deep One (think the Fomor).

Basically, you can expect a Walker to be Nyarlathotep, the Fomor to be the Deep Ones, and it's possible that they worship Cthulhu.

Edit: And I maintain that the Queens are avatars of Magna Mater, who was Hecate.

At the same time, I can see how frustrating it is that very little of the *Chicago* cast is Black.

I think it's just Rawlins?

Groinkick, you know Ammar will just point to the fact that Butcher has admitted that not every Word of Him is true. Also it isn't in the books.
