DFRPG / Magic Circle Materials (What does and doesn't work?
« on: October 02, 2014, 09:58:23 PM »
I'm curios what could and couldn't work to create a magic circle. My pet idea at the moment involves the user spray painting a magic circle around themselves and then dispelling the circle by hitting it with a different color of paint. How would you make one that doesn't involve chalk?

Earth is the most powerful of the four Classical Elements in terms of versatility.

I have a bear in my game, and after a bit of discussion between me and him he decided to take Claws and Strength/Speed, though he's a Black Bear.

DFRPG / Sponsored Magic and Refinement
« on: July 26, 2014, 08:02:21 PM »
A player in a game I hosted was curious about whether or not Sponsored Magic came with items, and if not whether he could get them with Refinement. I told him yes to the latter but wondered; can someone experienced with their flavor of Sponsored use Refinement beside this. They don't really have elements aside from our and don't have bonuses afterall. The book didn't offer an explanation that I could find.

Lexington Kentucky, in the middle of the war (around Dead Beat).

The group consists of a nerdy Wizard, a Knight Of The Cross who is bad at the second part, a werebear, and a a WCV who was switched at birth and you had BETTER BELIEVE I plan on compelling to shit.

We haven't gotten our first arc really going yet but I've set up the groundwork for it. They haven't yet met the Red Court Mafia Boss but they HAVE met the WC. The Wizard, who is a PI, gets hired out every so often by KY's Special Investigations goddess Cassandra "The Black Dog" Black. Recently one of their friends got his ass fried by lightning and eaten by wereanimals, but they dealt with that. Now they have to deal with a sniper that puts the DC Sniper to shame after killing a demon that very much resembles a heavily watered down version of The Operator.

It was an imperfect form. He was summoned by a Witch from the The Circle who hasn't shown up in person yet (and won't for like four cases) who more than likely summoned a weaker version so she could control him easier.

I also forgot to mention since you brought up that the Catch doesn't have to be Holy; they fought him in an arcade (which didn't last long between Slendy and the Wizard's badly failed attempt at on-the-fly Diabolism to bind him) and one player picked up a light gun and attempted to shoot him with it; he dodged it like any other attack. So light/laser guns affect him like normal. With that train of thought, maybe I could make his catch Magnets or something similar.

DFRPG / Let's Stat Up The Slender Man!
« on: July 08, 2014, 07:46:12 PM »
So, I originally planned a case to start out with my team being attacked by Slender Man and they kill him so that the PI in the group can get his paycheck. I took him out at the last minute and then told them about the original opening, only for them to basically beg for me to put him in. So I slapped together a very slipshod version of him with a really common Catch (Blades) because I couldn't remember that "All demons use holy as a Catch". So! I've got an opportunity to bring him back because I claim that only his shell was destroyed and he was weakened by the sorceror using him as a weapon. Lets stat him up!

He is a Demon who can travel through any and all electronics, as well as being able to jump into the Nevernever through them as well, because he was a creature that was created FROM the internet, via people believing the Something Awful thread on top of the typical Slender Man abilities. How should he be statted?

I like it, thanks. I took True Aim into consideration, but I won't know whether it's needed or not until the time comes. They aren't ready for Denarians yet, but when they are they'll be in for a Hell of a fight! :)

Maybe you could have his coin fused with his sword, as sort of a dark copy of the Swords of the Cross. He could summon it into his hand at any time since it's his coin, which would be a fairly scary trick -- he could walk into a building past security, unarmed, then immediately have a sword in his hand.

What power level are your PCs, and what skill level do their attacks/defenses tend to be at? With that information, I could write some stats...

They currently have 11 Refresh, and they'll either have 12 or 13 by the time the Knight shows up. From what I recall of there stats I have a Knight with Weapons 5, a Wizard  with Conviction/Discipline Great, a Werebear who acts as the Tank offensively, and a WC Vamp who's stats I can't recall but he's fast, has Awareness as his Superb stat, and who I assume can put up a fight since he's a former marine but he hasn't shown off much.

I love the coin idea.

DFRPG / Re: Technomancer

If I recall hexing had yo do with age as well. Harry has to use a part world war II Beetle and McCoy's stuck with a 1930's truck, so maybe a teenager like Molly could manage to use older computers and phones.

In my group two PCs had a brief conversation with their cellphones, with the Wizard convincing me that some could manage to use them. I let it slide and handed him a penny so the phone would cut out at the first inconvenient moment. I'm future sessions I'm probably going to compel him hard and often if he relies to much on it, but it was never stated how advanced it was anyway.

That said, Technomancy would be a hard skill to pull off. You would need to either have weak and limited magic or be better at controlled magic than damaging/powerful magic (Molly, Elaine). Sponsored magic helps too.

I kinda figured, so its good to have confirmation. I like the thought of a Fallen Sword though. That's more than a little interesting.

As for what I was looking for, Im going for a former Knight who betrayed his bretheren for the promise of power, to show just how dangerous a Knight can be.

I haven't played a PC yet, but my Wizard would probably use Gaelic and Celtic.

DFRPG / Fallen Knight Of The Cross?
« on: June 27, 2014, 05:59:33 PM »
So I was playing around with concepts for various villains for my PCs to go up against, including Vampire Mob Bosses, my own take on the Jade and Violet Courts, and a Wizard with Outsider powers related to song, but when I inevitably throw Denarians at my players as requested I wanted to do something new with it, which was when I hit upon an idea. What if a Knight Of The Cross switched teams to work with the Denarians for a reason that I have not yet determined (I have four different candidates for the Fallen Knight).

In my game I house ruled that there were more Crucifixion Swords employed by God's Knights than those made from the nails, with the second set having incorporated the thorns from the Crown Of Thorns. And its been shown that NON-Knights can use the Swords in-canon by Lea and Susan.

My wonder is how I would display this mechanically. My idea was to have his/her Holy Powers be rescinded, give them a Coin, and have them be able to still use their Sword through a loophole in its tenet. Would that work? Are there problems with my line of thinking altogether?

Personally, I like Fire for Metal since it has do be forged or at least milled.

I see what you're saying about interpretation. My group played slightly fast and loose with the rules so we never really ironed out what governs what.
