DF Spoilers / Re: Nicodemus theory spoilers, spoilers , spoilers

To ONLINE ClintACK, I really like your bit of wild speculation at the end.

I made the same observation regarding Nicodemus's potential elsewhere.

DF Spoilers / Re: Small Favor Reread: Who Has Thorned Namshiel?

How about instead of falling out into the water it happened before they left the island.  Meaning it is still either on the Island and will cause a future problem or a squire found it.  As far as we know Harry has never checked to see if there are any coins on the island.

I doubt that the coin would still be still on the island. When Harry sets foot on the island he instinctively Knows everything about the geography of the island and all the inhabitants. How long did he spend trapped on the island between Cold Days and Skin Game? Somehow I doubt that a Denarian coin passed unnoticed in all that time.

DF Spoilers / Re: What is the scope of a Soulgaze?
« on: July 15, 2019, 03:49:31 PM »
We know that whatever Susan saw when she shared a soulgaze with Harry made her faint.  Harry mentions the soulgaze with Susan, but doesn't go into detail about it.  He does say something about Susan not realizing how good looking she was.  That would be a very intimate thing to learn about someone.

Of course, this was said near the beginning of Storm Front and we don't know if Jim had a really solid grasp on what Harry experienced when he was  in a soulgaze when he writing his first Dresden novel.  It's possible he hadn't worked out the details yet.

That reminds me of an exchange between Terry Pratchett and one of his fans wherein the character of the Patrician was so different in an early book versus the same character several books later. Terry explained that away as the result of the first iteration being written by an inferior author (who had since been replaced.)

The other seminal point that is missing (although we've been informed of its occurrence) is the whole acquisition of Bob. Was Harry aware of Bob's existence at any point prior to the fatal confrontation with Dumorne?  Did Harry have to fight to claim Bob's allegiance? Did Bob play hard to get? Is Ebenezer aware of Bob's existence and if not, how did Harry manage to hide Bob in all the years he was in Ebenezer's care?

I guess this is the problem when ya get engrossed with a fictional story. The details matter and they aren't always available.

Thanks for the responses. My memory isn't anything to be trusted these days.

Well it's not like intimacy with another person is the only way to regrow the soul. Making art would probably do.

But I'm not sure there is a recharge option for somebody who's carrying one of the Queen mantles at all.

But making Art with a capital "A" implies the exercise of one's free will and as a being of the Nevernever, The Winter Lady is presumed to have surrendered the exercise of free will. Or is she also like Harry; a being both of mortal individuality and of predetermined Fae existance?

Discuss.

DF Spoilers / Some exposition I may have missed.

OK, I have read and/or listened to all the books and attendant short stories and novellas and I feel that I may have missed a particular plot point OR has our author still been holding out on us?

We 'know' because Harry has told us that Justin DuMorne was rendered into a crispy critter at the hands of Harry Dresden because he has informed us of the fact many times. We 'know' that Elaine was also presumed dead in the same conflagration. WHERE in all the books have we been presented with a detailed retelling of these events (a la the detailed remembrances of "Ghost Story") of Harry's fatal confrontation with his mentor?

Did I read it and just shunt the details aside in order to get on with the immediate peril in whatever story these details were presented in? If JB is still withholding relevant details from us, fine. We'll get the straight poop from him when he deigns to release the info and not before, but if I have truly missed the detailed retelling, please direct me to the appropriate tome.

In the first person storytelling mode we're experiencing, it makes sense that Harry is reluctant to divulge every detail of his last confrontation with his ward and mentor but when can we expect to see it? Is this the big choice that Harry makes in the "Mirror, Mirror" book? To follow Justin down the left hand path? Or later to succumb to the wolf belt in "Fool Moon?"

Now I'm branching off into other secenarios and I'm losing my original point. Harry vs. Justin, the final battle. Have we seen any detailed recounting of the events or are we all taking Harry's second hand word for the account of the events?

Your input would be appreciated.

DF Spoilers / Re: Brief Cases

For me, I feel like it's early days to be jumping into discussions of the latest stuff.  I was running errands yesterday and stopped in to my local library in the afternoon and checked the online catalog for the book's availability. I've been doing this since mid-June and the copies have been reserved and out every time I check.

Yesterday the library's catalog system indicated that there was a copy available at the Court House branch (about 12 miles away) and I bolted for the branch immediately.  At 2 in the morning I was starting to go crosseyed and reading the same paragraph twice so I stopped in the middle of Zoo Day and went to bed. {Full disclosure: I'd read Bombshells, Cold Case and the Bigfoot stories under separate cover already but I still re-read the Bigfoot tales only because I wanted to refresh my memory.}

I'm holding back on discussion only until more folks locate a copy and have read it themselves. Another 4 - 6 weeks and I'll be less reluctant to speak openly about plot and character points that have been revealed. For me Even Hand & Zoo Day were the most revealing info dumps and Zoo Day was a joy to read.

Well, I'm 17 chapters in and I'm quite pleased.  I'm getting a feeling much like I had about 50 years ago reading "Glory Road." Treat that not as a comparison between Heinlein and Butcher, but rather as my joy at experiencing a sense of adolescent pleasure at reading a ripping good yarn.

I've a good ways to go yet but I suspect that I'll be enjoying this immensely.

My take of 'Out' was that he is constrained from actions due to him originating from another parallel reality, timeline whereby he is attempting to limit his interactions with this reality until a set of conditions are satisfied.

So, I think he has a multiverse tinge to himself.  I also like some think he has angelic roots, whether that be on good or neutral side i dunno.  I get the impression though that he is versed in redemption when he talks to Harry about it being easy to walk into the Badlands.  I think he had his brush with it himself.

My take is that he is one of the angelic hosts tasked with the job title akin to "Auditor of Reality." But not necessarily in a bad guy Discworld way.

Here's one from left field: Margo Martindale as Mother Winter.

In the light of the news over the weekend I began to ask "What character in the DF James Garner could have played?"

He could certainly play funny, snarky, devious and able to take a major beatdown and then get up and hand it back. He couldn't do the really young version but I would have loved to see him as a mid-30's Harry.

Can I nominate Jeffrey Tambor for Goodman Grey?

Anyone else find it intriguing that Harry has never had a soulgaze with Karrin? ... yet?

Considering that Karrin would be one of the ideal characters to reveal what a person sees when they soulgaze Harry, I would well expect Mr Butcher to reserve such a treat for something in the BAT. In the meantime, Harry has looked upon Karrin in the heat of battle with his Sight (Blood Rites) and has witnesses a soiled Avenging Angel in white, if my memory serves me correctly (and she wasn't even carrying one of the Swords.)
