What helped me a lot when I GMed the Dresden Files for the first time, is asking my players to describe what they are doing. This sounds like a no-brainer, but many players have trouble with this.

Sometimes they struggle with a description and then the other players pipe in with awesome suggestions. Especially in those situations where my players work together to create something cool, they have the most fun. It's not the story YOU want to tell, it's the story your PLAYERS (plural, don't let one person dominate the game) want to tell.

That's the best advice I can give a starting DFRPG GM!

PS. Someone said something in the line of "when you throw a fireball at a mortal, have the mortal concede to die. But as far as I know concessions need to be accepted by the other party. Wouldn't the wizard simply not accept the concession?

It seems the water effecting magic is very situational and up to the GM then. In that case I'll simply go with what is most fun for the story.

What does running water do to thaumathurgy? For example, the wardens sometimes throw big veils over buildings (using thaumathurgy). What would happen if it was a very rainy day? Does running water effect thaumathurgy at all, or is it just evocation?

This is a topic I needed to read without me knowing it! Awesome, thanks for asking the question Albavar. it's what I struggle with most.

I can't seem to get the file in one piece :( When downloaded it claims it has unreadable content and rapes the data.

DFRPG / Re: Confused by toughness and the catch.
« on: September 23, 2013, 09:16:18 PM »
Question; example Red Court vampire. Their catch is holy stuff, sunlight and their flabby bellies. How do these catches play out?

For the belly, does it need to be a physical consequence that names the wound to the belly? Or just inflicting stress while you mention you were aiming for it? And is the catch satisfied for the entire scene (you can't suddenly get the blood back in your stomach) or only for that particular hit.

For holy, holy often doesn't do damage. So I was under the impression if one player shows them a faith symbol with conviction behind it, it would satisfy the catch and other players could damage it ignoring the toughness. Or does it actually have to be a holy attack to satisfy the catch, and once again, is it for that single attack or the scene?

How about sunlight? In the books it's like they are stuck by a physical blow when they are in the sunlight, but I don't believe the sun damages a RC vamp does? How about a BC vamp?

So yeah, also a lot of confusion here about toughness and the catch.

What constitutes as a refresh event? I haven't heard of that before.

If they want a bonus, have it create an aspect that they can tag for a +2.

The rules require at least a +3 to make an aspect, so reducing 5 shifts to 3 would give you two additional uses per session.  Not bad.

Could you point me in the direction where I could find this information?

Ah, yes I definitely misunderstood enchanted items. This makes far more sense and I won't be afraid it's overpowered at all. Thanks!

DFRPG / Is this enchanted item too powerful?
« on: August 24, 2013, 02:07:16 PM »
Is this enchanted item too powerful or balanced? This is the first time a player took magic in my game, and with that comes enchanted items.

Handmirror that imitates Abby's power to see 1-2 seconds into the future.
Created with A Lore of 4 with a focus item of lore +1 so Lore 5 total.

What we decided it does, is grant a bonus to defense (+5, usuable once a session, not usuable for other players) when someone makes a physical attack. Right now it doesn't cost any action to use, it's a free action.

If he lowers the bonus/power of the enchanted mirror by 1 he can use it twice with a bonus of +4. That seems really powerful to me, if he lowers it to +3 he can he use it 3 times. A bonus to any physical defense of +3, 3 times a session seems imba.

What do you guys think? Is it balanced?

DFRPG / Re: learning how to play?

The best thing would be to buy the book, the Dresden Files RPG-Your Story.
In here it is described step by step and with a lot of flavour text how to play the game. The other option would be to find a group near your location that plays the DFRPG and join them.

I think he means when you look at the powers as a thrown weapon (YS 162; Skills affected: Weapons (this is treated as a thrown weapon), it benefits from the strength bonus.
YS 183, Hammer Blows: With attacks that depend on muscular Force (Fists, Thrown weapons, etc), you are at +2 to dmg.

Some random questions and situations I've been struggeling with that I hope someone can help me with. Don't worry about answering them all, if you can even answer a single one I'm a happy girl.

1. Are all Sidhe immortal?

2. Can Sidhe harm mortals without cause or connection, or are they not allowed like the Faerie Queens are not. And what about regular faeries like ogres and trolls.

3. Any ideas for non faerie-monsters that aren't vampires or ghouls?

4. When a manoever has been placed and the person who has been affected chooses to spend his action to remove it. Does he have to beat the difficulty of when it was placed, or does the person who placed it get to "defend" to keep the manoever in place.

5. How do you deal with the party splitting up, and one person entering a physical conflict away from the others. Physical conflict usually lasts pretty long, and the others will get bored waiting for it.

6. I've discovered that as a GM I'm struggeling with finding good compels during a session. I maybe compel each character once per session, and usually for something that isn't that cool to the story. Does anyone have tips for me to compel characters more often?

7. What kind of situations/scenarios are good to let a knowledge focused character shine? One who doesn't have social/battle skills (he's a true believer). Getting information is usually resolved in a single roll while conflicts get much more screen time.

8. I have followed the rules in YS about scaling the opposition. But even when the opposition is much stronger than my player's characters, they fly through conflicts without so much as a consequence on them. I don't get it, what am I doing wrong?

That's it, sorry for so many questions! I hope you guys understand!

I love the rewrite, I might use that in my game. I do wonder how many FP it should cost.
