DF Spoilers / Re: WAG: why Nicodemus wanted the knife
« on: August 31, 2019, 01:37:10 PM »
My WAG is that Nic wanted the blood of Christ for some ritual work. The grail would have the most "residue" on it most likely, but each of the other objects would famously have some on them too, with the exception of the plaque.

But we dont really know what that is yet either. (my assumption was that it was the plaque affixed to the crucifix in most depictions of it, which bears the letter INRI) Seems likely if it was affixed to the cross, there might be some blood on it just by nature of where it was.

He must have survived or Murphy would have said something after they meet back up after all the excitement.

Jim said that by the BAT the whole world will know about magic, so even if he doesnt get recruited into the FBI paranormal ranks he can still dive back into the story then. I wonder how long it will take Dreseden to realize that his talent for detecting liars could be really useful to him and try to hire him on for some subcontracting.

DF Spoilers / Re: Summoning Molly
« on: June 21, 2018, 08:02:27 PM »
I think the manner and reason for the summoning are probably the most important factor. Harry would be unwise to summon Titania anywhere, ever, but he has been known to do some dumb stuff.

However, if he tried to use, for instance, the circle on Demonreach to summon her, that would VERY much be like holding a loaded gun against someones forehead. So then the question becomes how much of a compulsion Harry can put into the summoning, which is something we should ask Jim about sometime. I seem to recall Harry saying both that powerful beings could simply choose to not show up, but I also think I remember there being methods of summoning that are compulsory to the thing being summoned.

Could Harry actually FORCE one of the queens to come to him? Mother Winter obviously did not want to answer Harry's summon because it both hurt and insulted her, but she still showed up, after a fashion at least. I would guess that a powerful enough call could force even a powerful being to show up, especially if you have their true name. After that, you just better pray you have a good enough circle to prevent instant immolation. (like the one on top of demonreach. I am increasingly certain it is a VERY important part of how the warden does his job)

I would guess this is addressed more in the early books when Jim tended to spend more time on the nuts and bolts of magic theory, and I dont remember those books as well.

Alzheimer's boils down to cellular regeneration but the root causes of it are genetic. If it were some extrenal thing the body could fight off, maybe a wizard would be "immune" to it. But if it is something they are born with it would still effect them eventually. If the body is making defective cells because the genes are telling it to do so, thems the breaks.

However we dont understand the disease all that well. It is clear that damage to the brain from things like head trauma can accelerate or even possibly be the cause of it in some cases. So if it was caused by that, the wizards would have much more insulation from the effects.

Honestly, Jim has a ton of leeway in how it works, because of how little we understand about the disease and poor understanding of the human brain in general. In this case, it is very easy for it to just be whatever he says goes and it will still make perfect sense. So to that end, we know from WoJ that Wizards CAN get it (and related things like dementia) but likely will get it much later and slower. And that fits just fine with the story.

Cassius falls under the category of weakly powered caster whose long life span gave him enough time to develop a talent with some teeth. Other than the death curse the only spell I remember him casting without the coin was creating the snake construct that Mouse fought. He was able to do that with no focus items or preparation very quickly, which speaks to at least a moderate talent.

With Salurial, he did plenty. In fact, didnt Harry suspect that he was largely to blame for actually casting the entropy/Barrabus curse that forces him in doors with Susan?

Point being, he had plenty of knowledge on how magic worked (from a very ancient teacher) but very little power to actually get things done. I think we are all more concerned with his death curse than Jim cares about writing it in.

DF Spoilers / Re: Monster LLC: Goodman Grey a Venator?

Grey can also skip around in time and has likely appeared as someone else in our DF history books i'd think.

To clarify, I don’t think he actually skips around in time, I think Jim meant that because he is old the POV in the story can jump around in time. There’s a distinct difference between those two things around both the DF and the denizens of this forum. Some posters take their time travel WAGs very seriously.

I suspected in the past that the powers that be have been pulling strings behind the scene to protect Dresden when possible.  Mouse in Zoo Day says "I would have to trust to fortune, and the Almighty and Queen Mab and Odin and whatever other friendly Powers that might be watching that My Friend would, please, please, please be all right"

That line stuck out to me as well. Queen Mab a friendly power watching Harry? Im not sure if that is Mouse's optimistic nature or if he knows more about her than we do.

I think they’re both pretty difficult people, but looking at it from a woman’s point of view, Dresden is a terrible potential partner.

I generally hate shipping threads, especially Murphy ones, but I am curious. I assume from your name you are a female, what about Harry makes you think he would be a terrible partner? Aside from the potential of putting his love interests in danger, since that would obviously scare a lot of real people away, but in the books it would not be something that Murphy would see as a negative.

Goodman Grey fights in the Oblivion War! "It'll probably show up in the spin-off series".

Also, further hinting that George Washington was a Knight of the Cross, and that the sword of Hope would have been a very handy thing to have a Valley Forge. Which is very cool to me.

DF Spoilers / Monster LLC: Goodman Grey a Venator?
« on: June 17, 2018, 05:55:57 AM »
From the Lexington signing on 6-7-18.

Question about the oblivion war and whether we will see Harry involved with it. Jim gave the usual answer about people fighting the oblivion war avoiding Wizards like the plague because of their propensity to hoard knowledge. Then he goes on to say that Goodman Grey is involved with the war and it can potentially be a part of the spinoff series. It would work well for that character because of how spread out in time "battles" are fought in, where there will be a flurry of activity for a little bit and then nothing else happens for 30  years, and Grey is very Very old.

Does this mean that Grey is a Venator, or at least an ally of theirs? Certainly being human isn't a qualification since we know Thomas is one.

I, for one, really really hope that Jim is able to make this series happen eventually. I know he has tons on his plate already but still.

I loved Mouse's perspective even more, but Maggies is damned adorable.

I kind of hope Jim doesnt feel the need to explain more about the baddies Maggie sees. Obviously they are not just delusions, because of the book that was handed down from Molly and Hank. But they are also not normal supernatural threats, or things like the underhide would never have been able to enter the Carpenter's home. To me, it should live in that unspoken area like whether or not Hobbes actually comes to life when adults are not around.

Jim also just said that the bearers of the SK mantle are generally artistic types, not warriors, whereas the WK mantle has generally gone to people naturally prone to fighting an violence. Murph would actually make a better candidate for the Winter mantle than the Summer.

There was a question relating to this at one of the recent signings (I forget which). It was asked about mental illnesses like Alzheimer’s or depression. The response is that wizards are still human. Something like Alzheimer’s is a real threat (to a lot of people’s well being should a powerful wizard get it) and Jim said it is something they are constantly watching for signs of in each other at council meetings.

Think what Professor X did in Logan. I don’t remember what the movie specifically says happened but iirc it’s hinted that he had a seizure and killed a significant portion of the x men, as well as the population of the East Coast.

So I would guess that probably most conflicts would resolve in favor of the older royal, but not necessarily all.

It’s the Sidhe it’s never that simple. It could very easily come down to who Harry has incurred the most obligation with. And there is considerable question as to how much Molly considers herself owing Harry, and vice versa. Their personal relationship is potentially a very significant factor in any power struggles between Molly and Mab, something I am sure Mab is just thrilled about.

But looks like she's interested in making her own Choices which makes her a lot like Harry.

I have been repeatedly assured on these boards that Murphy and Harry really have nothing much in common.
