This may sound like a high-brow repsonse, but I write to make points with the story serving a giant exclamation mark.

One of my books was about vanity, another one was about TV, my newest is about underprivledge. I start with a point I'm trying to make and I build a story around it. It always works.

I used to write sort of supernatural horror stuff, but I kind of grew out of it. Now I write cotemporary fiction. My most recent story is a ghetto drama called The Minority House. It is sort like a John Singleton movie with the "hood" is less emphasized and paired with a privledged suburban setting. It is very character-driven.
