Other things are likely to bypass this as well, such as social attacks (if I know you're in the room, just not where), etc.

"Your thoughts betray you...a sister...Obi Wan was wise to hid her from me!"

"Nooooooo!"

As the lid first opens a tiny gap, a loud peal of thunder cracks and rolls overhead and the lights dim and flicker briefly...then all returns to normal. Inside is an ornate bronze contraption made from gears and springs. Its purpose is unclear. No manner of Scholarship rolls can decipher its meaning without intense study by professional experts.

Soon, things start to happen...a small earthquake is felt the next day; a landmark water feature (like a lake or pool) is found dry; winds reach unnaturally strong for the time of year; it snows etc you get the idea. Now, all manner of strange people begin to appear in town - supernaturals are found murdered and the only lead is a dark man with a hoody asking about some 'device'...

Time After Time. Malcolm McDowell plays HG Wells pursuing Jack the Ripper through time to the (then) modern 70's via his Time Machine.

Just pointing out a time he DID play a good guy

And Caligula! He was a good guy in that...wasn't he? I thought he was pretty awesome...

DFRPG / Re: Evocation-based sleep spell cast in Combat
« on: August 21, 2012, 03:35:39 AM »
Another thing to consider with the sleep spell idea, is that magic cannot change the laws of physics etc. A sleep spell would definitely be usable out side of conflict, but in combat? Not a chance. To make someone fall asleep you'd have to remove enough oxygen from their blood to put their brain into sleep mode, if you wanted to do this through physiology. That would require some knowledge of physiology. The only other way I can think of to make someone sleep during a conflict (when their brain is very much active and alert) is to break one of the Laws of Magic and use mental suggestion. Remember your spells still have to be explainable to real world physics like how Harry does it in the books.

A sleep spell in my games would be a delicate thing to achieve, not something you could do in a conflict without taking them out with stress hits.

Perhaps I should have mentioned that the rules are, from time to time, vague and/or contradictory.

Such as the Entanglement example spell. It spends one shift for duration to make it last for a scene, rather than the 1 shift per exchange rule mentioned in the evocation rules for maneuvers (YS253).

I've got a religious leader who made a deal with the devil, figuratively speaking. He made a bargain with a big nasty supernatural predator to allow it to prowl the streets and eat other supernaturals, all the while he is researching how to kill it in the hopes that when its job is done he can double cross it and show his 'people' the evil that is afoot. Jammed the players in the middle and going to see what fun abounds.

And Ghsdkgb is of course right about the time thing, you can't always be ready for anything. Or if you are, then you will be really (really really) jumpy after a while ;)

Prime reason you don't leave your Street Samurai's Wired Reflexes on all the time in Shadowrun :)

Start them off in a warehouse standing over a corpse and a bag of money, pistols pointed at each other.

Then flashback to your actual adventure.  :)

Oooo...love doing this in a game.

I locked all my players in a large closet and had them come up with an escape plan to get out of an enclosed room that was slowly being heated by a fire beneath it to cook them alive. No character sheets and no dice (I did all the rolling for them). Wasn't Dresden but it was still memorable. And geez the ice cream I was eating at the time was nice and cool and delicious...

Oooooooor, simply flavor the spell that it's making the target physically exhausted. Fudging with peoples' brains isn't the only way to make someone fall asleep. Just drain their strength until they're physically tired.

Or suck the air of their lungs and increase the oxygen content of the air they breath and make them faint...flavour flavour

Start things off with a classic Mexican standoff, all 3 parties facing each other while the world around them burns. Maybe they have to decide to put away their differences to team up against the BBEG to save the world/city. Then flashback to the past (where the game is played) and they're all unaware of each other to start with.

My end game is a return of the Dreamtime, an aboriginal myth about creation, only full of giant serpents and frogmen and murderous eagles. Making it a kind of fae court similar to the Erlking's court, having been repressed for thousands of years (Aboriginal folk lore covers approx 40000years after all) by shamans now that the aborigine tribes have been decemated the old wards have slowly faded. Monsters playground follows.
