DFRPG Resource Collection / Re: Item Of Power Master List
« on: February 24, 2012, 05:16:37 AM »
Let me know what you guys think.

Retribution and Reprisal, the Twin Blades of Just Vengeance [-1]

[-0] It Is What It Is- A pair of single edged machetes (when used together function as Weapon:3). Angelic script can be seen faintly etched into the blades if the light and angle are just so.
[-0] Unbreakable
[+2] One Time Discount- They're a pair of 2 foot machetes.
[-1] Holy- Blessed in the River Jordan and forged using a hallowed ritual, the blades are a powerful holy symbol in their own right. Their very touch is like holy water or that of a cross or other symbol of faith, backed by the belief of the user. (Can satisfy the catch of some creatures toughness/recovery powers)
[-1] Gift of the Holy Spirit- Increase the weapon rating of your machetes by two by filling in one mental stress box, this lasts for a number of exchanges equal to the value of the stress box you've filled in.
[-1] The Righteous are Kept by Him-  By interposing the Blades between the wielder and an attack, the wielder can deflect it as if the sword were an impenetrable barrier. They may use their weapons skill as defense vs all physical attacks and maneuvers that aren't indirect and mental attacks and maneuvers that require specific targeting or touch. I.e. the Blades could defend against a white court vampire's emotion-manipulating touch or a blast of fire magic but not against  poison gas or a fear aura.

So glad I clicked on this thread. Been chuckling since I started reading it. Love the hate.

All I know about Twilight is what I've picked up from my 14 year old sister. They sparkle in the sun, and they have skin like marble. Also, Bella's mind is apparently unreadable. The Cullen family are supposed to be "vegetarian" vampires, in the sense that they don't drink human blood (I think, I'd stopped really listening to her after the words "twilight" and "good" came out of her mouth in the same sentence). You could do something like give them all these phenomenal powers, but not allow them to use any because they refuse to feed.

That's how we run it too. If I cast a 5 shift evocation and only roll a 3 for discipline I can take a 2 stress backlash hit and have the effective discipline roll be 5. It's worked well so far.

The guy with the gun can't take stress to increase his roll, but it also doesn't cost him anything to pull the trigger, and he can do it a lot more often than a wizard could. Also, sometimes the tradeoff might not be worth it to the wizard, so the spell just goes off half cocked and sloppy. Again, something the guy firing a gun doesn't have to worry about.

"Billy B. rolls a 4 for his guns attack, D. McBaggleton rolls a 5 on his athletics to dodge. Bullet flies off into a wall." As opposed to the wizard. "Sparkles rolls a 4 on discipline to control a 5 shift Fireworks Jubilee spell, he can either take another mental stress to control it (and McBaggelton may still roll well enough to dodge), or he can let a point fly out into the environment as fallout." Higher risk, higher reward for the wizard, and I think that taking extra mental stress to control a spell fits in with that concept.

DFRPG / Summoning Ghosts?
« on: February 03, 2012, 06:09:30 PM »
Got a friend that wants to play a focused practitioner specializing in ectomancy. His idea is to summon spirits to aid him whenever he gets into a fight (his character is really not combat focused). He wants these ghosts to manifest and defend him.

Right now he has a Stu-from-Ghost-Story-esque spirit that tags along with him pretty much everywhere, and for the most part remains incorporeal. When the crap hits the fan though, Stu, along with several other spirits, will manifest and defend his character. One usually whisks him away to safety while the others run around beating the crap out of everyone. He's got Stu statted up, and he uses the stats for Li Xian (OW: 171) for the others.

Now, I'm not really worried about this being unbalanced (the others in the group don't have a lot of trouble keeping up with the spooks), I just want to know whether or not he could do it with the powers he has. I know he's got Ritual: Ectomancy, and something else that I can't remember at the moment. I think it's an IoP, a horn that lets him summon Stu and makes him manifest.

Could he do all this with just an ectomancy spell? If it is just a spell, how would it should it work? Should we try to work something else out? I've seen some ideas for summoning creatures floating around the board, would those work? Do you think the ghosts would eventually be driven insane from being forced (or compelled or asked or whatever) to manifest so much?

DFRPG / Re: Using Shields (the physical kind, not magic kinds)
« on: February 02, 2012, 04:50:34 AM »
It feels like there should be some sort of restriction or tradeoff when using shields, or, like someone else mentioned, everyone will be running around with a 6ft piece of metal strapped to their arm. Maybe some sort of encumberance rule? The higher the armor/defense rating of the shield, the bigger the penalty to moving and athletics checks. Maybe the wearing the shield grants you a temporary aspect? "Shield Wall", "Bulwark", "Covered", something like that. Use the normal sticky aspect rules, and maybe allow the player to make declarations using their weapons skill. As long as it involves the shield and is plausible.

Plus there'd be the issue of some guy walking down the street with a shield strapped to his back or arm. Not as big of a deal as wearing a sword around, but it's still going to turn some heads.

DFRPG / Re: Priest Wizard Character Idea
« on: February 02, 2012, 04:08:56 AM »
Wow, thanks for all the responses and ideas everyone.

After reading through everything and getting a better concept of the character, I'm leaning towards Sponsored Magic. Soulfire feels too... epic to just have. I feel like if the character is going to have it, he should get it somehow through the course of his story.

Need to talk with the GM and hash out exactly what the Sponsored magic will be able to do and whatnot. Maybe something like paying a fate point, or gaining a point of debt, to make an evocation have the Holy aspect, able to satisfy the catch for some toughness powers. Throw in a few Thaumaturgy at the speed of Evocation blessings using the maneuver rules in the Thaumaturgy section. Plus all the standard sponsored magic benefits and rules. Seems like there could be some fun times with that.

I'm really digging on this
(click to show/hide)
thing. I need to bust out Side Jobs and read that story about Forthill. My GM and I touched on something like this when the character concept was brought up, but never went too deep into it. Looks like I'll be fleshing this out a lot more. Gonna dig around and see what's out there about the order in the Dresdenverse, then fill in details as needed.

The character is a Priest first and a Wizard second. He wouldn't ever think of himself as a wizard. He views his talents as gifts from God, to be used in His service. He'd be much more antagonistic toward demonic or "evil" creatures, going after them before they have a chance to do more harm. One of his aspects is "Walk in the Light, or I will drag you into It"  He'd probably have no idea what or who the White Council is. Unless they've contacted him (not sure how good they are at picking up on magic talents, though I'm betting they've gotten pretty awesome at it), he'd have nothing to do with them. Should they contact him sometime later on during a sessions, well, that bridge will be crossed when it's come upon.

Thanks again for all the replies everyone  :D

DFRPG / Re: Priest Wizard Character Idea

My idea with the blessings was to use them as maneuvers. Character blesses person or location, thing gets a fragile aspect of "Blessed" or "Big Man's got my Back" or whatever fits that last until it's tagged or a scene passes. I'm not super certain on the rules for maneuvers having never used them, so if I could be totally wrong.

I never even thought of a ley line or blessed area or anything. That's actually a really neat idea!

DFRPG / Priest Wizard Character Idea
« on: January 31, 2012, 04:07:12 PM »
Hey everyone. Not sure if this has been done already or not (probably has), and I apologize if I end up asking a bunch of questions I could find answers to on the board already.

Ok. My idea is to have a character that uses both magic and faith based powers. We're sitting at 9 refresh in the game, so this gives me just enough for the Wizard template (replacing Thaumaturgy with Ritual:Demonology), plus something like Righteousness.

The general idea behind the character is that he was a magically talented teen who had no idea what was going on or how to use his power and got into some serious trouble with a weaker demon. I haven't really pinned down exactly what that trouble was, maybe he made a bad deal with it, maybe he was possessed, whatever, it was bad bongos. A clued in priest (akin to Father Forthill) was made aware of his problem and helped him overcome the demon. From there the character would have joined the church and become a fully ordained priest.

The parts that get kinda wonky are whether or not the Catholic church would actually help, take in, and train a wizard (or whatever they'd call him). And if they did, would they train him both spiritually and magically? I could see there being small pockets of people who are in the know in the church (again, like Father Forthill and his little band), but would any of them be knowledgeable enough to actually train a wizard? If there are, are they still small and pseudo-underground, or are they more along the lines of a secretive branch of the church? I realize all these questions are things I should hash out with the GM, but I was wondering what some of you people thought.

Now, mechanics wise, I was thinking of making one of his evocation elements Holy. My idea was to use it for things like Blessing other PCs and NPCs, uttering sacred words to stun or injure, and maybe do things like call down pillars of holy fire or turn vampires into piles of salt. The rub is that I don't know if all those things would fall under an element like "Holy", or if it would cause confusion since the spells would be of the Holy element in the wizard's eye, but not necessarily Holy in the game mechanics sense. The other two elements he'd be using would be Fire and Spirit. I can see a lot of places for overlap, but that doesn't really concern me since they all feel like they fit thematically.

Basically, I'm wondering what all of you think about the idea, how it's being executed, and if there are any horrible flaws that I haven't seen. Thanks for taking the time to read this whole thing, got a little long winded there.
