Calendar Event Discussion / Re: Jim's 2015 Schedule
« on: April 27, 2015, 07:36:51 PM »
Jim had a panel with Patrick Rothfuss at the Chicago Entertainment & Comic Expo (C2E2) this past weekend!  It was outstanding.  Rothfuss basically asked Jim about the Cinder Spires.  Rothfuss also asked Jim how he finds time to write and when Jim usually sits down to write.  (If you know Jim well enough, you know he writes through the night).

I also got a signed print of Tyler Walpool's Fool Moon #8 cover art.  Which then I also had Jim sign after the panel.  Just gotta get her framed and hung up!

So... Taking bets on how long into the Q&A  someone asks,  "Why does Dresden have a hat on the cover of the books?"  Don't be that guy!

I'll probably just check out the Barnes and Noble early, probably be there by 5-5:30.  I'm hoping to be off the roads before rush hour hits hard and heavy.

Unfortunately, I don't have an eidetic memory, nor do I keep a journal of my YouTube viewing history.  If I locate it again, I'll be sure to notify you appropriately.

Actually, my memory is better than I thought it was, and it is NOT the same video that Serack posted (I haven't even seen that video yet).  Here is where I found the Will Smith comment:

Really?  Last WOJ on it I recall seeing had Michael Fassbender as Harry, and it was Alexis Denisof before that

Absolutely 100% heard "Will Smith" come out of Jim Butcher's mouth in a YouTube video for one of his Q&A sessions at a book signing.  If I'm not mistaken, it was in 2011.

If I recall, if Jim had his way, he has said that he would love Will Smith to be Harry.  I can see it, but then that would mean Thomas would have to be black too, unless Malcolm was black and Margaret was white, then they could get away with a black and white half brothers.

Per the WOJ, it doesnt' matter to him what the actor looks like, it is how well they can play the character.

I'm 50/50 between Jim and some of you that feel the actor should look as much like the character as possible.

However, here are some of my pet peeves regarding picking actors for my all-time favorite book series:

The "DO's"....
1.  They DO need to be of the same gender as the character in the book.
2.  They DO need to reflect their character's background, for example, if their character was born and raised in Chicago, then they should have a Chicago accent.
3.  They DO need to portray the personality of the character somewhat close to how he/she was described in the books.  Don't be one of those actors that doesn't even look at the books because they are so arrogant that they want to "put their own spin on the character".  These are established characters, don't think you can just go ahead and completely re-create them just because YOU are an AC-tor!

The "DO NOT's"....
1.  They do NOT need to be the same height as the character is described in the book
2.  They do NOT need to have the same exact hair color, length of hair, or the same number of gray hairs!
3.  They do NOT need to be of the same color skin as the character in the book.

That being said, the lead actors probably should resemble their characters as much as possible, but as you get into the supporting cast, you can pretty much just get actors that will play the character well, not worrying too much about appearance, unless it relates directly to the story line.

Yeah, I'm not going to wait until June 4 to buy the book, in fact I'll have read it completely by then.  I'll just have to buy it from my local B&N and bring the receipt.

Question for those that have attended Jim Butcher book signing before:

How are they organized?  From the Q&A's I've seen online, it appears like it starts out with the Q&A, then Jim signs.  Is there a chance for photos?  Or is that when you get your book signed?

Thanks!

This is a Tibetan Mastiff at 10 weeks. :D

Yeah...NOT!

At 8 weeks, when most dogs are weened, a large breed dog like Tibetan Mastiffs, Newfoundlands, Great Dane's, they are still half the size of that dog in the picture.

Another suggestion that just came to me, no specific reference: If we assume Mouse had a normal development pattern for a dog (and his vet didn't seem to spot anything odd), he would've been born about 8-9 weeks before Blood Rites.  Old enough to be paper trained and to handle Thomas's large breed puppy chow, but still be small enough that Harry doesn't initially realize he's that adopting a woolly rhinoceros.  ;D

Aging and Growing, are two separate things.  I think the growth pattern matches exactly to a normal dog (gets to full size in same amount of time).  For a dog that big, just like my Newfoundland I own, it take about 3 years to finish their growth cycle.  I think that matches up pretty well with how mouse was portrayed in growth in the books.  So yeah, I think Mouse was definitely no older than 10 weeks old when Harry found him.

No exact date given, but Bombshells strongly implies that either Daniel or Matthew Carpenter served in Afghanistan.  Can we figure out which, and narrow down when this may have happened?

Assuming that Jim knows that you need to be 18 and a high school graduate to join the service, I believe the only possible person it could be is Daniel.  I'm not sure any of the other kids are out of high school yet (during "Bombshells")
