DFRPG / help with character based on music
« on: September 11, 2015, 11:24:52 PM »
My group is going back to DFRPG mid october and I have an interesting idea for a character, but need some help with how magic works for him.

The story goes that his grandfather was an exceptionally talented and rather egotistical musician.  Such an ego that he even challenged the devil to a contest.  Yes, the song "Devil went down to Georgia" is real.  So now the devil has his goons out making trouble for this guys family.  They are all exceptional musicians, and with the help of that "fiddle" have some degree of magical abilities.  I am going to be playing him with some ego.  He is more of a social character.  Combat wise he is more back line.  I need help with the magic aspect.

DFRPG / my players are requesting
« on: February 06, 2012, 12:10:56 AM »
They have been asking me to drop in the Cullens sparkle "vamps" for them to have fun with.  By fun I mean beat up.  They have stuck through a rather lengthy story that is getting close to over.  I am inclined to grant their wish as a light hearted break from the big story.  So my request is for some help stating up the Cullens since I have never read the books.  My players are at a 9 refresh level and as much as they want to steamroll and curb stomp the not vampires, I want them to learn not to underestimate things.

hm...Ive already dropped hints of the library's existence in the nightmares of a player with a story aspect of recurring nightmares (he got tricked into a soul gaze with a real nut job necromancer first session.  never thought writing nightmares would be this much fun.)  So just wandering into the Library doesnt sit too well with me, at least not yet.  Once there I am planning on spinning it like the Unseen University Library from discworld with other influences of course.  And they wont be allowed in the stacks w/o some form of payment.  In this case it will be a story that has only been passed down verbally, so it doesnt exist in the library yet.  I am confident the players can figure that one out.  They have already been told the story.

Back on topic, two of the players are casters of some skill and one of them is part of the white council, albeit an errand boy for the council.  So they know of the nevernever's existence.  So they could also probably get there on their own then.  Just need to poke them in that direction so they know thats where the Library is.

I really like the flavor of the stuff on the wiki.

I am planning on using the library http://dfrpg-resources.wikispaces.com/Nevernever+Location+The+Library for an info dump for the players as the next major step of the story, but im not sure how to introduce the nevernever into the game.  There are no changlings in the group.  They have had interactions with a small variety of fey that are hiding from the courts.  I have already started them on a chain of events looking for a specific book that is one of a kind.  after they have dealt with the problems currently at hand, see my other post combat variety, they are going to be visiting a family that has possible ties with Baba Yaga in search of the book.

The npcs that the players are getting under control are the ones that are attacking the bikers.  The motivation they have for getting involved is one of those npcs has some important information but he is more concerned with avenging his friend at the moment.  The biker gang is lead by a were gator and is a random split of weres and mortals.  They have a side line of being supernatural mercenaries and are part of a side plot that i have been dropping in here and there for later story elements.  Being the tough mercenaries that they are, they wont take kindly to being attacked on their home turf.  It isnt going to be all in from the very go though.  The npcs will have subdued one w/o raising an alarm by the time the group shows up.  They are just about to attack two more that are out for a smoke when everything starts.

The players have shown they are adept at combat, so I have given them this bigger challenge that they will need to be real creative and lucky to over come w/o talking.  Also doing it like that shuts them out of possible allies down the line when they might really need them.

As far as pulling my punches, I am figuring i might need to if the social combat thing falls flat and it becomes a genuine tussle.  Some members of the gang are open to the idea of talking and some arent.  Notably the were gator is open to talking things out.  Obviously the gang member already subdued isnt to keen on talking things out.

Ok, i have run into a problem.  The next encounter I have for my group is a rather big one.  They have one or two npcs on their side, but they are facing off against a biker gang.  The numbers arent in their favor.  I have all the npcs stated out.  The two on the players side are itching for blood because they think the bikers killed their friend.  What im hoping for is a physical combat encounter that modifies into social combat once the players get the npcs under control.  Im just not exactly sure how to run social combat.

For purposes of my game, I am saying that the Erlking is the Autumn Court, but he is more concerned with hunting and doesnt go in for all the court politics.  On a related note, that would be Captain Hooks connection to things.  He is a trophy hunter, kind of like the guy from Jumanji.

DFRPG / campaign 2

Early in my first campaign I established as a returning character a sidhe who wants to start up, or restart the spring court of faerie.  So the players have bumped into him once or twice during the main story as he is working towards that end.  At some unestablished time later, after the big bad from story 1 is gone, things get serious for mr spring court.  Namely, to establish his court and have it recognized, he needs more power.  This is where the players come in, either working with or against him.  Havent decided yet.  The source of power he has his eyes on is Neverland.  Turns out, there was indeed a spring court at some point long ago, and the place of power for it was Neverland.  The obstacles to that power are Peter Pan and Captain Hook.  With out some one to lead the Spring Court, the mantle of Spring Knight has been falling to children, thus there has always been a Peter Pan.

and that is about where my idea stops at the moment.  Just curious what anyone thinks and what suggestions people have.

I have a group of 5.  3 casters, 1 water, 1 fire and 1 geo.  1 ursathrope and 1 pure mortal P.I.  We are at 8 refresh at the moment.  the water and fire casters are main damage.  geomancer is utility.  ursathrope is the local connecting and tank.  P.I. is the talky.  of course they take turns trying out the different roles, sometimes to hilarious ends, but thats how the characters are built.

I was planning on going with the gold catch after reading the wiki article.  Breath weapon is already listed in the books.  Im just torn on how to do something akin a dragon's fear aura from DnD.  I have been looking at the incite emotion power, and having it attach an aspect of Scared for his Life.  I'll see what I can see in the custom list.

Thanks.  I was planning on a greatsword, but saber has a better feel to it.  When everyone is there i have a five player party and they are creative, (i love that) so the one in the link feels a little weak.  the obvious solution is upping the toughness and strength powers.  I would like to be as creative as they are though.  So, some home made stunts?  I'll take a closer look at the stunts list here.

My New Orleans game is goin great.  I am planning a special encounter for Halloween, a Dullahan.  I could use some help on what abilities to give him.  I want to make it a real tough fight.

are you still taking requests?  I just finished and really like all of these.  I dont think I saw a were gator anywhere, and I could use one to round out my New Orleans game.

Tourism bureau seems obvious now.  I'm definately going to be frequenting here with questions for my campaign since up till now my experience is mostly as a player with d20 systems.

I was thinking of having as a sub plot going on that some faerie hiding from the winter court in NO, and Katrina was Mab trying to get at said faerie.  I just need a reason for Mab to be hunting that seriously after another faerie.
