I've been kicking around the publishing industry for about a decade.  I've had two agents and been a bridesmaid, not a bride, at least as far as a mass market deal goes. (I've published in the small press).  It's a tough road.  Self publishing is also a tough road, but for me, it's a lot more rewarding.  I took the plunge in July and self published a novel.  Aminar, I must say, it's not a short cut, and most certainly doesnt evidence a lack of faith in myself or my work.  It's the exact opposite.  I believe in my books and I'm taking it upon myself to make it happen.

Would've loved to have gone to this.  Someone please post a trip report!

Indeed they are dangerous.  Dangerously convenient!  I love my one-click.

Whatever you do, start charting the next book and dig in as soon as you 'finish'. Take the old one and dump it into a drawer and let it mellow for several months. Then bring it out and decide.

At the same time, start reading about the business end of publication. That time will never be wasted if you intend to stick to this wild passion of writing.

I agree.  Keep working on new material and keep trying to improve.  Also keep up to date on the business side of things, which currently is changing on a daily basis!

I dont want to bore you with my life story.  But I've been circling the periphery of the publishing business for about a decade.  I've had two agents, written five novels and accumulated hundreds of rejections.  I did have some success in the small press and built up a grassroots following.  Breaking into the industry is tough, and the search is deflating and downright debilitating.  I'm from the old school.  I always thought self publishing was for wannabes without the talent to make it.  But times have changed quickly.  I've come to believe that authors dont need agents or publishers, what an author needs is an audience.  The internet and digital technology is the great equalizer.  You can connect directly with an audience.  Once you do that, people will want to do business with you.

That's my opinion.  And that's the road I've chosen.  We'll see how it works out for me.  Best of luck to you and most importantly, keep at it.

Well, speaking just for myself, I don't physically print the things out until and unless a publishing professional wants it in that format, so "words on a page" is not strictly accurate and I'm just OCDish enough not to use it.

How about words on a screen?

As writers, there's pretty much noting we should always do except get the words set down.

Words on a page is a good start.

As writers we should always strive to invent and create.  In my novel, I created my own monster.  Dont get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with a fresh spin on an old favorite, and there's always a market for that too.

I wouldnt recommend paying for an editor at this stage.  Just tune the book up to the best of your ability and then approach agents and see what kind of interest you get.  If you are looking to self publish, you might consider paying for editing services.

I need to have a beginning and an ending before I sit down and start writing.  The middle is totally negotiable...

I'm sorry to see Borders go, but I love my Kindle.  It took me a short time to get used to it, but now, just like my music collection, I'm all digital.  I still check books out of the library from time to time but I dont expect to purchase many paper books anymore.
