Calendar Event Discussion / Re: San Diego 2011 Comic Con
« on: July 21, 2011, 08:10:18 PM »
Absolutely not.  Other than those five sample chapters, there is to be NO discussion of material from Ghost Story until July 26th.  We'll post our updated spoiler policy soon.

Yet another reason you're the best, Lady P.

Ooo, and one of my favorite movies of the past ten years, Walk the Line, is more than half flashback.

...you realize you've been writing part freaking THREE of a series instead of PART ONE.

Yeah. That happened to me. Ob. Noxious.

If it's well done it should be ok. Even Jim used them in at least one book I remember, the scenes in Camp Kaboom and what follows.

Probably one of my favorite scenes, too.

My take is that any scene that slows down the novel is bad. In the case of flashbacks, using Camp Kaboom as an example, as long as it's full of action that moves the character forward, you're safe. My general rule: you can do whatever you want as long as it's cool and exciting. If Camp Kaboom had been Harry sitting around drinking, being sad, going for a swim or watching Star Wars by himself at the drive-in, then it wouldna worked.

DFRPG / Re: so...finally...
« on: July 20, 2011, 05:00:03 AM »
I found it very very easy.

And the forum here will be very helpful if you have questions. Plus, the PbP board can be a great help.

So try it. I doubt you'll regret it.

PS: What's up with the title?

I guess I meant "now that enough time has gone by, what's the final verdict..."

But I'm tired.

Is the DFRPG easier to pick up than say....3.5 D&D?

DFRPG / Re: Looking for Ideas: Ferrovax
« on: July 13, 2011, 09:12:32 PM »
Story-wise: Ferrovax, rather than feeling threatened, sees potential here. This upstart with dragon blood might be just what he needs to  bring the magical world back under the sway of draconic forces and make the people fear dragons again.

Perhaps in her, he sees a vassal, or better yet, someone who can speak for him to the White Council or to the fae courts until his manipulations can bear fruit.

Display Case / Re: Perfect Casting, part 2

A really great DF casting page I found: http://thefaust.wordpress.com/category/detectivesmysteries/

I'm pretty sure a lot of you have seen it. But I still dug it. :)

Where do we ever learn that Little Chicago achieves sentience?

Bob's a jerk. He bends Harry's rules all the time. Maybe Harry denied him the limited anniversary edition of Juggsapoppin and so Bob decided Harry needed one more snarky pseudo-inanimate object in his life and gave birth to "Tim the LC" (sounds like a DJ).

Pretty soon Harry's life is going to resemble Peewee's Playhouse - nothing but animated couches and chairs all over the place.

I mean, the obvi answer is that he's in the phone book. But that's not nearly as much fun as it being....Elaine or somebody.

Hi Author Craft forum,

So, I have a question for you all. I'm just finishing up my life as a student in creative writing at UCSC, which is a very workshop heavy program. As you might expect, large workshops tend to generate a lot of great feedback, but a good portion of it seems like opposite responses. This is especially true if you've taken a work through more than one class.

How do you guys deal with conflicting responses and critiques?

-Ramenth

Take the edits and suggestions and think about who's giving them. If a student and an established author give you conflicting ideas, you'd be wise to give the author's ideas a little more weight. But in the end, you know the work/characters best. If a note contradicts your over-arching theme or something, it's gotta go, even if Tolkein himself gave it to you.  :)

Author Craft / Re: Getting too wordy?
« on: June 17, 2011, 05:51:11 PM »
An issue that I have: every single chapter needs to further the story, not the character.

The kind of writing I like is where the action of the story reveals the character. So the first thing to get axed in my stuff are what I call "looking in the mirror" moments - where the protagonist is thinking, meditating, worrying, contemplating life. Neat as it may be to write, it doesn't serve the greater story. By the time the character is exhausted and feeling all existential, we should know exactly who they are. They don't need to tell us.

From the Erevis Cale Trilogy: "Dark. Dark and empty!"

Empty by itself was an insult, too: "You're empty, shade. Broken."
