DF Spoilers / Re: Dresden Files animation
« on: April 17, 2023, 05:44:31 AM »
Ah man, as an animation student I would be SO down for an animated Dresden Files. I agree with the studios you listed as well. As long as Netflix (and Fox) doesn't host it, as they have a current trend of cancelling after 1 season for most of their shows. 2D animation has also seen a downward trend lately by being backed up budget-wise. Picking the right service and production team would be careful juggle. Disney obviously has the best budget, but they prefer to aim towards animation for children only. None of their animation is above PG-13, and DF needs to be adult oriented or it'll lose much of its impact.

I can see hour long episodes with 2-3 episodes per book if condensed correctly. I've personally imagined many book scenes can be shown in one minute that takes many pages to describe. I've storyboarded short scenes from the books years ago, though I've lost those scribbles since.

DF Spoilers / Re: How did you find The Dresden Files?

I'm in the minority I guess. I was introduced when I worked at Borders Books during my hard core fantasy reading phase in college, and a coworker noticed and recommended the series. I believe the most recent release at the time was Proven Guilty. Like many others, the first 2 books were good, but it didn't hook me until book 3. I am now a die-hard fan. Currently doing the re-read by audiobook while I work...until the next book release.

DF Spoilers / Re: Harry's Will
« on: April 07, 2021, 06:39:08 AM »
A nice sentiment, but we are referring to the specific spiritual attack that Ferrovax, Mother Winter, Drakul, Vadderung, and the Lords of the Outer Night and the Red King use. I haven't seen any mortal being use such an ability or anything close to it. But Drakul makes me think Harry might just be able to.

The human ghost Sir Stuart of the Colonial Marines in Ghost Story used pure Will to shove Harry back when the Lemurs/shades began attacking Mortimer's home the first time.  So there is at least one human element that can and has used Will power.

Quote
Chapter 5
...
"I can see you were a fighter, boy," Stuart said, his voice harsh. "But now you're a child. You've neither the knowledge nor the tools you need to survive." He turned and gave me a ferocious glare, and an unseen force literally pushed my feet back across five or six inches of porch. Holy crap. Stuart might not be a wizard, but obviously I had a thing or two to learn about how a formidable will translated to power on the spooky side of the street.

DF Spoilers / Re: Killing King Corb
« on: February 08, 2021, 06:58:09 AM »
Adding in my idea:
So it is said that he wont die until the sun touches the bottom of the ocean, which to me reads: when our sun dies and in its last stages of yellow sun, it expands into a red sun, thus enveloping all the way out to mars' orbit (or 'roundabouts). Making that about a couple billion years from now.

My solution?
Throw King Corb into a pocket dimension of the Nevernever and lock him away there until such time passes and he's released right as the sun expands. To him it's like no time has passed, yet billions of years go by on the mortal plane. This has been discussed in the DF about the fae doing this to mortals, but only in chunks of a few years to several dozen.

Removes the asshat King Corb from everyones lives, and follows the prophecy.

DF Spoilers / A very minor thing at the end of Peace Talks...
« on: November 30, 2020, 07:22:24 AM »
Just re-listened to my audiobook at work and came across something that might be either a blooper, or might be something significant to entity's of Power. (all emphasis mine)

Quote
Chapter 28
[king Corb's appearance] ...Between the design and the bizarre, disturbing imagery of the embroidery upon the sea-colored fabrics of each layer of robes, I was feeling a little queasy.
...His skin was pocked and warty and a sickly blue-green where it wasn't ghostly pale...

[Ethniu's first appearance] ...They looked like she'd had them bronzed a long time ago, and the bronze had been covered with verdigris and then polished irregularly....Flickers of metallic and colored crystals were embedded in that bronze exoflesh.

Chapter 29
...It was her eyes that bothered me. Or rather, her eye. One of her eyes was a crystalline emerald green.
...She paused for a moment, and that emerald eye landed on me like a truckload of lead, regarded me, and dismissed me all within half of a heartbeat.
...Her closed eye quivered, and suddenly there was a light behind the scarred eyelid, red and pulsating through the thin skin.

Okay, so what I'm truly pointing out here isn't just the colors, but why. Harry is supposed to be under the influence of his grey-field 'don't-see-me' potion. The only time color is mentioned on a being is when they take notice of those under the potions influence, like Ferrovax and Vadderrung at the party as he was leaving with Thomas and the ladies.

So that bears the question:
Blooper?
Or does King Corb and Ethniu have a kind of locational/reginal intellectus (sp?) that makes them aware of Harry past the potion but not in a way where they're consciously aware enough to ask if someone was hiding under a veil?
Or were they actually aware he was there that whole time as they pulled up in the speeding van at the entrance to the castle, but just ignored him (which might lend credence to her eyeballing him under a veil inside at the party but making no mention of it)?

Thoughts?

DF Spoilers / Re: I'm A Bit Confused... Nemesis or Outsider or Both???
« on: October 24, 2020, 02:47:47 AM »
It doesn't seem that complicated when you think in computer terms.

  • The Outer Gates are a Firewall that block almost all traffic from the Outside.
  • Free Will Summoning is a Firewall Port that's open to the Outside that allows traffic in.
  • Black Magic Use is something that opens local Ports on the user, which Outsiders can use to access the system.
  • HWWBeside is a Hacker who's gotten inside the firewall and can use Black Magic Ports to open more Ports on local systems, including Remote Access Protocol.
  • The Athame is a USB drive with HWWBeside's malware that will open Ports without Black Magic Use initiating the intrusion.
  • HWWBeside is likely hosted on a system inside the Network (Reality), which is his foothold.
  • HWWBeside might be able to pass from host to host if the right ports are open.
  • The question is if HWWBeside is limited to one system at a time, or if he can be on several.
  • The possession of Lea shown in PG implies that HWWBeside was trapped inside Lea at the time, but managed to escape her system and moved to another.
  • This could mean HWWBeside is limited to actively possessing only one host at a time, but it may be that he can be on several (my guess would be three) and he didn't like having one of his install instances/licenses tied up on a quarantined system.

This makes sense to me and clarifies some things. The last one though leans towards your second observation - since HWWBs has had an active role in the background for much longer. So it being locked up in Lea was more like Mab didn't want her second infected and was 'burning' the infection out. And HWWBs didn't like being quarantined (as you say), but slipped out and got Maeve.

DF Spoilers / Re: The Next Book's Title
« on: October 23, 2020, 10:32:43 PM »
But then, he does not say anything about Thomas and Justine, which are, in my opinion, the things that need urgent resolution. And with him not saying anything about that , I am afraid he is going to kick this until after the wedding (which seems more probable now than before).

It's too soon to say, as Jim came about the next book organically (very likely during the writing of PT/BG). As a writer with a sudden new book thrown in next with no warning, he possibly only has point A and point Z of the next book figured out, and dealing with his brother's situation and everything else still needs mapping out. Which means he literally can't tell us any more info yet.

But I too am also glad there will be a book on the aftermath. There's so much to unpack these past 17 books.  :)

DF Spoilers / Re: Money [BG Spoilers]

He needs to get an investment adviser.

Toot advises to invest heavily in pizza futures.
Maybe he'll get lucky and the events of BG will have made property values in Chicago plummet.

Becoming a franchise owner of pizza restaurants in a city with property values that plummet after a major attack would be the smartest move in investment on Harry's part. The wild Fae would agree. Then he truly would be The 'Za Lord.

Because Jim decided that the diamonds only amount to 2 million IIRC and that's just not that much when fitting out a whole castle (and paying property taxes).
The taxes alone on owning the amount of Square footage his boardinghouse took up in Chicago would be a large dent on its own. And he's not rolling in income either.

Harry’s power with the Eye is that he can keep it from being used, not to use it himself.

(future WAG-time) The only time I see the eye being brought out again is sometime around the BAT. Harry gets possessed or influenced by something strong (though not an outsider because he's Starborn), carries the eye to the greatest reality barrier earth has: The Outer Wall. Whatever gets him there, he/it uses the eye to bring down the wall. Maybe he accidentally releases a creature from The Well, or didn't put correct stipulations on it, and it takes Harry over.

Oh and one more thought, since Chandler was booted into with might be an alternate reality by
Drakul, Harry meets up with him.  Chandler then becomes Harry's "Spock" if you will, keeping him grounded on what is real and what is not.  If anyone makes it back to this reality with Harry, it is going to be Chandler.
I like this theory.

1] is Bob going to tutor Bonea now?

While it would be amusing, this sounds like a terrible idea. Harry hopefully has enough sense by now not to put those two heads together.

Though I can imagine some wacky hijinks if they do. Just think: A short story involving Maggie, Mouse, Bob, and Bonea. They go on a case to help Harry without him knowing it. lol....Maggie as the leader, Mouse as the sensible/responsible one, Bob as the trouble-maker, and Bonea as the one that tries to help but ends up making things more complicated.

DF Spoilers / Re: So is anyone going to address... [BG Spoilers]

Short answer: yes?

Theory on what: Wizard of Chicago gets upgraded to Wizard of Earth #52. (....That was an allusion to DC's "The New 52 multiverse", playing on the fact about another mirror Dresdenverse....and likely many others.)

One thing I notice is the fact that Marcone has been holding and using Namsiel's coin for years now and the KoTC has not even reacted. No mission from above, no divine revelation, nothing. Assuming that Marcone has not done any bad things with this power all this time, I doubt anyone would believed it. This should tell us something.

There should be some consideration on this theory that Marcone had enough will power (without doubt) and knowledge (also without doubt after hiring his 'magic counselor' Gard), that he didn't pick up the coin for some time. He likely held out until things got truly dicey for him. Like maybe after Harry's death and the fomor kept causing harm in his city and his people.

Kinda like Harry taking up Mab's offer of more power as a Winter Knight when he was backed into a wall, maybe Marcone's timing of picking up the coin was only very recently.

I'd imagine Harry will open up the Castle to be more of a community center for those who are Supernatural or Supercurious. Mouse for community outreach. Michael or Will for self-defense lessons. Basic classes (pamphlets? a web site?) on thresholds and circles and how to know when it's time to call in a wizard.

Turning his home into a business would weaken his threshold, and that's bad with the knowledge of the upcoming events. Everyone who visits would have to be considered guests by Harry, and be there overseeing the invites all the time and observing guest-right too.
He has enough on his plate.

If anything, he could support another location to do this....maybe his old office building location, if Marcone doesn't already own it.

Wait, what was the info on the wrestling book? I heard it once years ago, but thought Jim was just joking. Do we have any extra info on it?

DF Spoilers / Re: Gatekeeper's Age
« on: September 29, 2020, 05:35:32 AM »
I had a mild thought, but Rashid could have had a jaunt in his early days in the Nevernever that went sideways and got stuck for some century or more...It's often stated that this happens to mortals who aren't careful dealing outside the mortal realm.

He's still within mortal wizard age limits we know, without being older than 'Ancient' Mai. Isn't it stated in Summer Knight that Mai is around 900, or was that a WOJ?

So, Rashid is old and skilled enough in the 7th-8th century to kill Alhazred, but then some time after gets stuck several centuries in the Nevernever (maybe a long trip to the very far away Outer Gates?), and when he gets back, oops it's now 500 years later.
