DFRPG / Re: What do your wizards do for a living?
« on: April 01, 2015, 02:01:19 AM »
My wizard, besides being a Warden, works for the U.S. Marshals as a specialist in violent crimes and the occult but he lives in a smaller town and finds himself spending most of his time as the defacto head of security at the city court house.

This sort of thing depends on the person who wields the magic. What do they believe?

Does anyone know if the expansion for the RPG is still in the works? I haven't heard anything official about it in ages and a internet search yielded nothing new.

DFRPG / Re: High Powered Wards, What's the Point?

I was reading a thread on wards and some people in it mentioned pulling in 30-50 shifts of power for one.
Why would you bother?
If a ward is a block layered over a threshold, what purpose do you have for one stronger than 15-20 or so?  Very few things are capable of hitting harder than 8 or so, and the ones who are hitting at 20+ are rare indeed.  Add several shifts to duration and short of rigging it to explode all over people you shouldn't need more than 20-30 ever and there is no reason I see for 50.
Am I missing something?
In case the player character in question has pissed off a major league ectomancer with an army of zombies at his command.

In the last game I played there was a unique character with an interesting back story. He had a spirit of the Nevernever in his head (think something like Lash) who was teaching him magic. He was then taken by the Red Court, who infected him with the bloodthirst. He was on the verge of turning when the spirit in his head intervened. The spirit managed to kill the hunger demon but it resulted in her being permanently bonded to the character's soul. He didn't turn into a vampire but he did turn into...something. He has strength and speed similar to the Red Court but none of their weaknesses.

DFRPG / Re: Wizards and technology
« on: April 02, 2014, 05:14:25 PM »
No, most wizards don't have as big of a problem with technology as Harry.

1. The more raw power you have, the bigger of an effect you have on technology. Harry has already rated himself as among the top twenty wizards or so in power. Molly can't hex things like Harry does, for example. And its been shown that practitioners from the Paranet can use and keep cell phones without much difficulty.
2. Its been suggested that the reason mortal practitioners effect technology the way that they do is because mortals are constantly in conflict about their own self identity and this conflict creates "turbulence" in their magical aura. I think Harry is more conflicted than most.

DFRPG / Re: Quick Question.

So yeah, long story short, the ACTUAL question that DisasterWalk didn't want to ask and we had been talking about is basically about focus items.  He thinks that smaller focus items naturally have an advantage when it comes to control, whilst I've been using the RPG to explain that larger focus items can basically "fit more magic in them", and as such, a larger focus item specifically made to improve control would be better at it than a small one.
I think the mindset/attitude as well as the level of skill of the practitioner would greatly affect this.

1. There is a WOJ stating that with enough power over magic, you could rewrite reality. We also have examples of big magic being in small items. Like the fallen being bound into coins, for example.
2. You can't do magic you don't believe in. So if you think you cant fit a big spell into a small object, you won't be able to.

DFRPG / Re: Need to familiarize a total noob with the Dresdenverse...
« on: March 05, 2014, 07:47:24 PM »
Hi folks,

I've been wanting to play a Dresden campaign for years now, and a small group of friends have finally gotten on the same page and want to do it as well. One of our friends has always had a mild interest in this kind of thing, but hasn't read the books, and since we're starting in less than two weeks, there probably isn't time for him to read Storm Front with his schedule. It's not like the concepts are hard to get, and he'll grasp the basics easily enough, but we want to give him a bit of a primer before hand as best we can.

It's been years since I watched the TV series, and while it does have it's flaws, it's "close enough" to give him an idea of the kind of world this is. Any suggestions on a couple of episodes to get him to watch as a sort of Dresdenverse primer, so he can have an idea of what kind of character to play and what to expect in the game?
He could design his character as someone who is new to the world of the supernatural so that the character itself is inexperienced. I did that for a game of Vampire: The Masquerade. It worked fairly well.

Probably not. Or someone would have opened a pizzeria in the Nevernever ages ago.

Well, the Servants are humans who have been "upgraded" with parts like gills, night vision and other fun stuff. I'd look to the Creature powers for ideas. The Fomor themselves are aquatic, related to the Sidhe and have used entropy and water magic. A Fomor Lord makes an interesting appearance in the short story Bombshells, if you're looking for an official source of information. But we really don't know much about them or their motivations.

Nothing official. You might try the Dresden Files RPG Resources wiki for ideas.

DFRPG / Re: Recovery from moderate/severe mental consequences
« on: December 24, 2013, 04:11:41 PM »
All your character's "healing" could be done off screen. Essentially the character would just have to hang on to the consequence for however long the rule book says and it'd be a compel-able aspect during that time. It reflect real life. You can have your heart broken and you'll be a mess for a while but eventually you'll get over it. Getting professional help or talking to a sympathetic friend can speed but either way, its going to take some time. I think I had a PC in my game who failed at a mental defense roll against an attack from some White Court vamps and our GM gave him the temporary aspect "PTSD" for a couple adventures.
