Site Suggestions & Support / Re: Mortal, Apprentice, Wizard

Isn't SPAM wonderful (sarcasam)!!!!   heh, fortunately at the board I'm at now that isn't a really big problem.  My board is only a little over a year old and we also only have a bout a dozen fully regular members.  But every now and again you just get that one who is a bit obsessive with post counts, ranks, karma rating, etc....    Hopefully that won't become an issue here but you never know...  Here is part of the SPAM guideline that I have posted on my board for people who don't know what SPAM is:

SPAM Guide
SPAM: Stupid, pointless, annoying messages. SPAM can be in many formats:

1. The one-liner: "Yeah, I totally agree!"
2. Excess use of puncuation/smilies: "Cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" "Say what? ? ? ?? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?" or   ;) :) :D :-[ :-* :-* :'( :-[ ::) :( 8) :o
3. The irrelevant post: For instance, say the thread is about any given Movie, and you post with, "My cousin's sister's mother's brother's father's friend's aunt had a friend in said movie."
4. The double-post: Posting twice in a row, without good reason.
5. The double-topic: Posting a thread on something that already has a thread. For instance, the whole "favorite baby names" and "what would you name your kids".
6. The impatient post: For those of you who have ants in your pants, and can't wait for your requests to be finished, and so you decide to post in the design thread with "IS MY BANNER DONE YET?!?!? HOW LONG WILL IT BE?!?!"
7. The reviewless review: "I loved the movie!" - This is NOT a review, people.
8. The questionless questions: When you post in Meet the Staff forum- you need to post questions, NOT things like "Hey you're from Virginia like me, that's so cool!"
9. The caps lock posts: IT'S ACTUALLY CONSIDERED TO BE SHOUTING WHEN YOU TYPE IN ALL CAPS, AND IT'S PRETTY RUDE TO SHOUT AT PEOPLE, DON'T YOU THINK?
10. The I-Know-I'm-Not-Supposed-To-Reply post: This happens especially in the polls for schemes and such - I even TELL you guys NOT to post in them, unless you chose "other" as an option, and therefore you have to reply. But a lot of times, people reply anyway.

Site Suggestions & Support / Re: Spoiler Code?
« on: May 28, 2006, 05:11:13 AM »
I noticed that in several forums there are separate threads on the same topic.... "spoilers" and "no spoilers" If you have the ability to add custom BB codes the addition of a spoiler code could cut down on some of the confusion and need for extra threads / forums...
This is an interesting thought - if threads could be marked for spoilers (i.e., S-D7 would be a spoiler for Dresden Files #7, or some such) then theoretically each member could have a 'spoiler tolerance' chart. So if my chart is set to D8, CA2 then the forum doesn't show me posts listed as spoilers for Dresden Files #8 and Codex #2. If spoilers don't bug you then you just don't change your setting and all the posts are there for you. When you get caught up you change your spoiler tolerance and voila!, you now get all the posts. :)

Neat idea. Prolly a heckuva lotta freakin' work tho.

LOL... wow that would be a lot of work but really cool in the long run....  I'm not that advanced of a coder though.  I was referring to the addition of a simple BBC code so you could do something like [*spoiler] blah blah blah [*/spoiler]

Site Suggestions & Support / Re: Rules on graphics?

I wondered about this as well because I was tempted to run off and make myself a banner for here :-D  On the forums I've been a member of and the ones that I have helped run... the basic Avatar size has been 100x100 and a general sumation of signature guidelines:

-Total sig no larger than 8 (sometimes upto 15) lines of text which includes graphics
-No more than 3 total images allowed in your signature (smilies do not count)
-Only 1 animated banner
-No banner larger than 450x150
-No "kewl" talk or DiStOrTeD text

eh, just some generalities to think about... mostly you only run into problems when you have the younger and/or those special overzealous members.... heh

Hahahahaha... I don't think you understand how quickly people will become "wizards".

<-- has over 14,000 posts to OverClocked Remix, with the 9th-most posts there.

I know right.... some members on my board are approaching 2000+ posts....   I think my rank system is set up to cover upto 10,000 posts or so.  Although I'm not sure what else you could use here unless you did like a further breakdown of your proficiency level as a wizard or some related thing...  Although I think its fine just having just those two, even if it come to having you increase the post counts till you reach the wizard level....  you'll always have those members who become obsessed with their post count on message boards even though its just a number and any slight differentation (such as deleting a post of theirs because its SPAM) will cause them to totally freak out  *sigh

I'm sure you have... but did try setting CHMOD to 777 in the directory where the AVs are to be uploaded?  I work with vBulletin Board software which is pretty similiar to this, I can check and see what they say to do...
