DFRPG / Re: Unidentified Faerie Folk
« on: February 19, 2011, 02:27:58 PM »
I can't recall, but do the books mention redcaps?

They're nasty buggers. They can change their size from wee little fellows to hulking brutes. They get their name because they kill folks and dip their caps in their blood, staining them red.

In the Dresden-verse I imagine that they'd end up being hitmen and thugs.

Mechanically, redcaps probably have some limited shape changing. The little form has Diminutive Size, while the large size most likely has Inhuman Strength, Toughness, and Recovery. Most likely has the standard iron Catch.

Sluagh are pretty cool. They're thought to be the spirits of the dead not good enough for Heaven, but unwanted in Hell. They fly through the night like flocks of birds, and have been known to swoop up travelers at night and carry them off into the night. They're also thought to sneak into the homes of those on their death bed, hoping to carry off the person's soul to join their masses. On rare occasions, they'll rescue people from shipwrecks, but that's thought to be really bad luck for the saved.

In the Dresden-verse, we don't tend to have actual spirits floating about all wily nilly. So perhaps they're a type of faerie that crafts more of their own from ghosts before they can go off on their own or fade.

Mechanically, probably has Wings (that likely look like some sort of clothing when not in use) and Cloak of Shadows. May optionally have Glamour or Unseelie Magic.

Redcaps as I recall wore iron shod shoes so that means they are unlikely to be affected by the catch of iron.  Though they did have a classical catch that I thought was nice and wicked.  They could easily be banished if you had one of their teeth, of course in order to get a tooth you had to beat the crap out of one first.  They were affected only by their OWN tooth, but one could assume that having the tooth of one would be intimidating to any others you might run across.

One I've always thought had scary potential was the Fachan.  Very creepy looking and should have some interesting powers.  Also known as peg leg Jack, it would bounce on one leg chasing people with a club in its one hand.  It had one eye, ear, nose, mouth and arm all down a center line at its front almost like a person cut in half and reshaped.  My thought was this was how they were made, and if you killed one the other half would be compelled to hunt you down.

DFRPG / Re: NPC and plot ideas

Had a nice plot idea yesterday.  Was reading about the 14th Dalai Lama (the current one) who has stated that the next Dalai Lama will be born in a country that is free (i.e. Outside of Tibet) and would possibly be female.  So what if the 15th Dalai Lama was born in your town?  I see Foo Dogs, Monks, Jade Court and Chinese spies all over the place.... not to mention all the other factions going "how can I use this to my Advantage?"

Which brings up the question, How do you stat up the newly reincarnate Tibetan Buddhist Pope?

IMHO I'm thinking that ANG would require not merely a sponsor .. but also the other local signatories to say Aye!  ANG should be outside the conflicts of the Accords, ie "we don't fight here"  A place where no one member has undue influence or pull, a place where agendas are not active (talked about, but not implemented).  Starting something there would likely bring reprisal from ALL the other members of the Accords, as it would/could be considered as a strike against the detente that the Accords create.  I don't think either of the Queens would be willing to use Marcone's favorite Italian Bistro as NG simply because its "his bistro", with all the people employed there answering to him.  The way I see it, any ANG should be a place that all agree is outside their petty (or not so petty) disagreements, and can not be targeted.

DFRPG / Re: So what IS the agenda of the Fae Courts?????

Themes are a great way to go about it.  They don't have "human" motivations, and certainly do not use the same thought process.  The Summer Court is as likely to go ballistic over a trampled flower as the Winter Court might over someone tracking new fallen snow...or they might not.  Whatever they do they are likely to be either very passionate about it, or completely blase.  And whatever it is, their reason is likely to may you go.. "What?"  Mode of thought is just alien to the mortal mind.  Their agenda might simply be that they were bored at the time...

DFRPG / Re: 4th Nail/Sword of the Cross ideas suggestions?

I like the idea of a piece of the True Cross as well, though my thought was a staff carved from it.  You'd have a LOT of wizards sorcorers and others fighting over that.

DFRPG / Re: Why would the Autumn/Spring courts have Queens?

It seems reasonable, albeit it clashes with WOJ. In one interview Jim states that the Erlking is the king of Summer and Santa Clause the king of winter.

However it is your game, and you are free to change whatever you want really to make it work for you :-)

Seems a little to ... pat perhaps?  In most of what I've read the Kings were more "aloof" but were there.  They were certainly willing from time to time to interfere and meddle in mortal affairs whenever the chance arose, but were just less likely to dive in head first.

From the way the characters are trending, its going to be a lot of walking the edge of bringing the wrath of someone down on everyone's head.  Outlaws from the court, outlaws from the council, upstarts and renegades... making a political scene twisted and Byzantine just seems only fair.  The players know there will be very little Council presence in the area, and the closest warden will be 3 hours away.  The big danger is annoying that irascible wizard in Missouri and having him drop in for ... a little talk.

DFRPG / Why would the Autumn/Spring courts have Queens?
« on: January 19, 2011, 03:27:56 AM »
Summer and Winter have Queens yes.. but that does not need to imply that ONLY Queens can rule.  There have to be Kings somewhere (and not just the Erl-King either).  I remember from a lot of the enumberable books on Fey and Faerie that there were Kings.  Oberon was often away, and the Queen had a lot of power  (I see them as Oberon/Spring and Titania/Summer).  I'm looking at this as a power play by the Queens to usurp a good bit of power and weaken a potential rival at the same time.

I plan to use Oberon as the King of Spring and I think that King is better for the aspect.  It is the planting season, the Farmer tills the land.  Summer is more the nurturing and caring of the crop.  I'm thinking of using Mabon as the Autumn King as Mabon was listed in many tales as a mighty Hunter, a harvester if you will.  Mab would be more life in suspension, awaiting the coming of Spring.

My current thought is that Oberon had gone missing some time ago and Titania took over as much of his power as she could, Mab unwilling to allow her rival to create such a significant change in the balance of power had to do likewise to Mabon.  I see Mabon being either a prisoner in the Winter areas of the Nevernever or possibly in hiding.  Oberon is simply wandering about either in our realm far from caring about the intrigues of court.  The courts of Spring and Autumn decided not to go head to head without their Kings and keep quiet and out of the line of fire until one or both of the Kings return.

This seem like a reasonable idea?
