Marginalia between Will and Butters on page 208 of Paranet Papers.  They're discussing an NPC named Saul.  Butter's says he'd work as a quest-giver.  Will asks if he has a big exclamation point over his head.  Murphy gets snarky.

I *love* these margin notes!

DFRPG / Has anyone used the Spell power option from Paranet Papers?
« on: April 26, 2017, 09:58:17 PM »
It looks like an elegant solution to allowing spell casters to mimic other powers.  The kinetic martial artist from Ghost Story?  Inhuman Speed Spell.  Skilled at illusion?  Glamour Spell (Hi, Molly!).  *Really* skilled at illusion, bordering on forcing your will on reality?  Greater Glamour Spell.  A healing factor to rival Wolverine?  Inhuman Toughness Spell.

Need to specialize the sorcerer and used your Refinement limits?  Spell.

Need to specialize that focused practitioner and don't want items?  Spell.

It reads nice, but I'm interested in people's play experience.  I can't report mine, because I don't have DFRPG group.  I live vicariously through these forums.

DFRPG / Re: Dresden File RPG vs Dresden Files RPG Accelerated

DFRPG had the conceit that Will was working on an RPG, with margin notes from Harry, Bob, Butters, and Karin.  The marginalia was extremely entertaining.

DFA has the conceit that Ivy is preparing this as a report for a client.  The marginalia is between Ivy and Kincaid.  It's even *funnier.*  See if you can guess who the report is for.

There don't seem to be as many jokes in the index, though.  I suppose that to be expected from the Archive.

DFRPG / Re: Is the fate system the best for the book series

Well, FATE seems to fit the setting pretty well, but I can think of at least two other rule sets that would fit.

First, there's In Nomine from Steve Jackson Game.  I'd use the following mapping:
Evocation magic is Coporeal Songs.
Thaumaturgy is Sorcery; some addition skills/rituals necessary.
The Nevernever is the Ethereal and all its denizens.
The various vampires can be handled by various Discords.
You'll need to decide if the "known" supernatural landscape is accurate or if the default IN cosmology applies.
Voila; instant campaign setting.

Second, a d20 system could work.  Before I heard about DFRPG, I was noodling around with a DF setting.  I'd use:
d20 Modern, with the E6 limitations (nobody gets more that 6 levels; add'l XP buys feats)
Green Ronin's True Sorcery for Evocation
The Incantation rules from Zombie Sky Press, Unearthed Arcana, and d20 Modern for Thaumaturgy.
Do some template work for your supernatural races.
Voila; instant d20 setting that can be DF or similar games with the serial numbers filed off.

*Any* rule set can be used for any setting with some work.  Shoot, the Friday Night Gaming Group plays Prep and Landing games every Christmas using Call of Cthulhu rules.

Silver John met them in the novel After Dark

That explains it; I've not read any of the Silver John novels, just the short stories collected online by Baen Books in _Mountain Magic_ and in the printed Paizo collection _Who Fears The Devil?_.

You know, John would be a perfect NPC for a Feet Wet game.  He could serve the same role as Micheal Carpenter w/o the Sword o' DOOM.

More or less. They're loosely based on the works of a local pulp author and Lovecraft successor named Manly Wade Wellman.

Which of his works are they from?  I've got the Silver John stories, and I loved those.
