In my game, we have the Christian Coalition version of The Fellowship of Saint Giles. It's a Roman Catholic sponsored organization that seeks to save victims of supernatural maladies by forcing them to set aside their powers. They're housed in a bunk house on a church property, and the leader of the organization secretly want to use his wards as a personal army one day.

I didn't end up using this one this time around, but I think it mightbe amusing to have a band of mortal ghost hunters in the city. You could have your PCs clash with them, save them from themselves, or work with them.

We also have a North American branch of Monoc Securities. You could have Vadderung designate control of the subsidiary branches to another god. Loki might be an interesting choice.

First off, DMS that filler guy was no marsters and I had issue with that as well, constituency is key.

However your conversation has gotten dangerously close to(if not already breached into) spoiler territory so you should probably put up spoiler edits

Fixed ;)

DFRPG / Re: Mobile Homes and Thresholds
« on: March 22, 2013, 08:37:57 PM »
The thing is, Harry's apartment has its own threshold.  It might not be as secure as that of the Carpenter family's home, but it's still somewhere that a mortal has lived, has put down roots, and has cared for (I'm sure thrift store rugs count as taking care of it).

Like many of these metaphysical concepts, I would treat it more as a belief than anything physical.  If this person lives in the same "place" while on the move (and you, as the GM, are okay with it), I would give him or her a threshold.  Maybe not one as strong as a nice Tudor in a well-established neighborhood, but a threshold nonetheless.  Ditto houseboats, if it would ever come up.

I would say that it's really up to you.  It would depend on how strong of a threshold he/she wants, how they can justify it in story, and how long they'd lived in this mobile home.  Your standard bachelor pad might not have much of a threshold, but anything supernatural is going to be at least aware of the fact that it's entering a home.  It might not slow down anything further than a flock of pixies (do pixies flock?  Swarm?  School?  Murder of pixies?  Seems wrong to me...), but that's still a threshold.

Thanks to all of you.  That answers my question.

The one thing I disagree with is...I thought the mind-battle in Molly's head was awesome. I felt it was consitent-ish with the character. How else would she portray all of that do you think?

Sure, I agree it's consistent with her character.  I took issue with it being consistent with the mood of the story at the moment.

So, them's my thoughts on that.  If you had a different reading, that makes me happy because the more enjoyment folks get from these books, the better place the world is.

That's similar to my own thoughts.  I'm just looking for some ethos to back up my statements come next session, so thanks to both of you.

DFRPG / Pure Mortal with Items of Power
« on: March 22, 2013, 04:04:47 PM »
Hey World,

I'm starting a new campaign/adventure/nerd-session, and one of my players wants to roll a Pure Mortal, but also to give him an Item of Power.  He mentioned it at the end of our session last night (we spent like two and half hours on City Creation, and bumped up against everyone's spouse-enforced bed times), so I don't know what exactly he was thinking of using for an item, but I wanted to bounce some ideas off of you all before I green-light it.

So:  penny for your thoughts?

I'm of the opinion that Supernatural Powers are outside the realm of Pure Mortals, and that includes Items of Power.  I'm trying to think of instances in the novels in which a mortal shlub gets a hold of a magical item, and the best I can do is Butters being Bob's master in the later books.  In game terms, I don't want to unbalance things by giving the mortal character the +2 to Refresh and the Item of Power.  I think that it's within the scope of his High Concept to have magical stuff (he's a thief of magical stuff), so my concerns are more of the balance variety.

not a fan of Ghost Story?

No, it's easily my least favorite of the novels.  I thought that it could have used another judicious editing before publication.  Jim's usually really good at including a lot of pop culture references without making them seem like obvious fan service, but he was less successful on that front with Ghost Story.  Granted, this is all my opinion, and I love the series like I will love my first-born child (assuming he/she isn't somehow prenatally mortgaged in a deal with a Faerie Court in the next few years), but I felt like Ghost Story was a huge sidetrack from the over-plot of the series.  I know that I'm not aware of where the series will go from here, so it could (and likely will) tie into the plot in future installments, but it seemed to deviate so drastically from where the series had been heading til that point.  It's the only one that I haven't been able to reread more than once.

Also: my first reading of it was on audiobook, and James Marsters didn't read that one.  The temp guy drove me nuts (he said "potatuhs" instead of "potatoes").  It lent to the overall feeling of that book not fitting in sequence.

I really, really want to make a focused practitioner with a brace of dueling pistols packed with Forzare level force.  You wouldn't get a ton of uses out of them, but they would pack the punch of several jackhammers in each shot.

Now that I think of it, Harry sort of uses something like this in Ghost Story, but I've kind of blocked most of that book from my memory.

Do keep in mind that, since this is power from an Outsider, the Wardens will come for snicker snack. The people with these powers may also have to take Lawbreaker 7th.

Sort of.  To me, the Laws are about choice.  The act of killing someone with magic isn't intrinsically evil, but rather making the choice to kill someone with magic is.  Similarly, someone afflicted with this taint wouldn't have chosen to have the power, so in my estimation, they wouldn't fall into the Lawbreaker category. As Harry says, magic is about belief, and believing that you should be able to do evil things predates doing the evil things.

Now, a zealous Warden (is that redundant?) might not care for that semantical argument, but to me as GM, it is extremely important.

Also, trying to find out what caused this taint is a very central part of the adventure plot, so I don't want to change things around too much.

Echoes Of The Beast might also be appropriate.

I've thought about that, but it looked to reflect more of a fauna quality than a demonic one.  I also want to keep refresh low, so I ended up cutting it.

PS: Would you like me to add this to the Template list?

Yes, but I'd like to submit a more complete version.  Could I PM you when I've got that worked out?  Thank you, by the way.

RE: Domination:  I haven't played with it before, so I will probably go with the fan favorite on this one.

Thank you all for your input.  I will update in a day or so when I've had some time to go over revision, and I would appreciate any further opinions you all might have.  Thanks again.

DFRPG / New Class Template
« on: March 17, 2013, 06:56:27 PM »
Hey all,

Before the getting to the brass tacks:  I'm new here.  Granted this isn't a high school lunch room, I've still been lurking a bit before posting, but I thought I'd introduce myself now as well.  So:  Hi to one and all.

Brass tacking:  Our group is reasonably new to DFRPG (which is a bloody long acronym, now that I've typed it).  I've run one adventure before, to good success, and one of our players was present for that.  Now that I've got the hang of the very basics, I thought I'd start tinkering the whole mess of things and pouring chemicals together (in this metaphor, the DFRPG is a chemistry set).

For this adventure, I concocted a new class that I based somewhat off of a hybrid RC-I and WCV template.  The differences are that they don't have the high refresh of a WCV or RC-I, are much more stealth/deception based, and are very "in canon" for the adventure.

I've tried to format things just the way that Evil Hat did with the source books, so hopefully things make sense with the descriptions.

Here are my questions:
Question the First: I'm working with an Up to the Waist difficulty.  Does anyone see this class being over-powered or under-powered?  I realize that the Refresh system is a very good cap on both of those things (as customization makes up for an inherently "weaker" class).

Second:  Working within the constraints of the [-7] Refresh cap, is there a good way to manifest the Inhuman Strength/Speed/Toughness at particular times?  I'm thinking of allowing these PCs to spend hunger stress to temporarily manifest Strength or Speed or whatever.

Penny for your thoughts?

DFRPG / Re: Stating Slenderman
« on: September 01, 2012, 03:20:46 PM »
I've been planning a game for Halloween with Slendie as a "villian."  I haven't gotten around to statting him yet, but I conceived of him as a scion of a Wyldfae associated with the Erlking.  Both of those characters have links to Germanic folklore, both of them are seen as beings who steal, terrify, kill, or are otherwise associated with children, and one of the first things that you read about scions in the novels (in Blood Rites, if I recall, when Kincaid is first introduced), is that they tend to be insane, first and foremost.  That seems to be a pretty good definition for Slenderman.

Of course, the simplest way to make him (and probably best way to kill your players) is to make him an Outsider, as that's clearly what he is.
