One other thing: The default character sheet that Hero Lab uses for FATE Core won't work well with this.  It'll cut some things off.  You can still work off the output of the stat block, though.

Trying to figure out character sheet design is next on my list, but I've no idea how good of a job I'll be able to do there.

Anyone here use Hero Lab?  One  of the reasons I'm asking these questions is that I'm working on set of user files for Hero Lab.  Not quite done yet.  Might still be a couple weeks before it'll be presentable.

I'm planning to share it out for anyone who's interested.  It'll still have some shortcomings.  It won't have anywhere near full descriptions of skills, stunts and powers as I have to be mindful of copyright.  But it will be reasonably functional.

Say I take Inhuman Recovery as a power and define a Catch for it. Then I take Supernatural Toughness and Physical Immunity.  Do each of those require their own catch, or do they all, collectively, just require at least one?

OK, after some time away from the screen, I've read your replies (thank you), and I've reread the power description, and I see what I missed before.

With the Strange Senses option, it says the small set of senses have to be thematically related.  My brain held on to that went I went on to read the description for Broad Senses, but that's not actually specified.  So, "Broad Senses" can cover something like, Smell Hope and See in Complete Darkness.  Those aren't thematically related, but for Broad Senses, they don't have to be.

I understand the point that the senses defined would still have to fit the character.  I was just confused about the bare mechanics.

Another question, if I may.

Supernatural Sense [-1] indicates that it can be taken multiple times, each time for a different sense.  And it has two mutually exclusive optional trappings, each at an additional cost.

Strange Senses [-1] (Define a small set of up to three thematically related senses.)
Broad Senses [-2] (You have up to a dozen senses.)

If I take Supernatural Sense, then add Strange Senses for a total of [-2], then from the way things are written, I gather that if I wanted to add another trapping of Strange Senses, I would have to add another instance of Supernatural Sense, define a different sense, then add the Strange Senses trapping to that.

And I'm assuming the same for Broad Sense.  In other words, I can take Supernatural Sense multiple times, each time defining a different sense, but for each instance of Supernatural Sense, I can only add one instance (not multiple) of Strange Senses or only one instance (again, not multiple) of Broad Senses.

Am I interpreting this correctly?

I hope I'm not asking a question for which I've missed an obvious answer, but what happens in terms of Refresh when someone upgrades to a power that replaces an existing power?

For example, at character creation, say I picked "Inhuman Speed" which costs 2 Refresh. After playing my character for a while, and getting some advancements, I want to upgrade that to "Supernatural Speed" which costs 4 Refresh. Supernatural Speed replaces Inhuman Speed.

Do I still pay a full additional 4 points? Or do I just pay an extra two points to make up for the difference?  Are the 2 points I originally spent on "Inhuman" simply lost when I upgrade to "Supernatural"?

My question, though, is what if the would-be defender chooses not to roll?  For instance, I, as the GM, tell a player, "someone is whacking you with a sword, make a defense roll vs. athletics."

For some insane reason, they say, "I'm not going to make any attempt to dodge or defend.  I'm going to stand perfectly still and let the sword fall where it may."

Would you treat their defense roll as 0 or as -4?  And in either case, would you add in their athletics bonus if they're not even trying?  (I'm guessing the answer should be 0 with no bonus.)

I don't know if I'm missing something simple here or what, but I'm confused about the evocation example given in the book.  On page 251 of Your Story, it gives an example of Harry using a fire evocation with 8 shifts of power to attack a vampire.  Harry's roll plus his bonuses equal a difficulty of 8, so he succeeds in the evocation.  The vampire tries to defend, but only rolls a 4.  Given that Harry wins the roll, the attack itself is successful.  I understand all of that.

What I don't understand is how the attack comes out to +12.  An excerpt from the example: "The vampire rolls to defend against Harry’s roll of Legendary and gets a Great (+4), which means the blast strikes home and inflicts a 12-stress hit on him (4 for the attack, 8 for the weapon value). "

Harry used 8 shifts of power, so that's treated as a weapon:8 attack.  I don't understand where the "4 for the attack" came from.  Is that the difference between Harry's roll of 8 and the vampire's roll of 4?  I've skimmed through other parts of the book on weapons and conflicts, and I can't find a solid explanation of this.  If my stated guess is correct, does that mean that every attack causes damage equal to it's weapon value plus the difference between the attacker's and defender's roll?  And if the defender doesn't roll to defend, would that be treated as a defense roll of 0?

Please help.  I'm confused.  :-(  Please don't tell me to RTFM.  I have read what should be the relevant sections, and I'm still confused.  I'm looking for a solid explanation of how that "4 for the attack" comes into play.
