Cinder Spires Spoilers / Re: Loved it! Thoughts...

One thing that struck me throughout the book was the parallels to the Honor Harrington series by David Weber.  I don't think it was an accident that Weber was one of the reviewers of the book (especially) since he belongs to a different publisher.  You have sentient cats, enhanced warrior "breeds," ship to ship battle, different cultures clashing (and in my opinion eventually coming together to fight a greater foe).  Discourse between characters is very dialogue driven (as with Weber).  One of the primary characters is even a captain of unquestionable honor.

In Storm Front, Harry wrestled control of Victor's demon away from him by stating the demon's name three times.  Only, the third time he said the name of the demon he garbled it and said it improperly, yet still managed to tear away Victor's control.

How do you explain that, unless Harry has the ability to re-name entities?

I see Outsiders owning the universe before the big bang happened, lots of of nice empty night.  Then God and His buddies, the other various gods and goddesses, archangels, angels etc, butted in and created the heavens, the earth, planets, stars, galaxies, etc, then mucking it up further with all matter of life forms...  All the Outsiders want, is their playground back, things were so much more simple then...

You may be correct.  Only "The Butcher" knows.   ;D   But, if I'm right, it would explain how Merlin was able to trap the Major Gods and significantly strong entities.  Jim gave us an object lesson in Summer Knight.   A mantle of a fallen God/entity/Lady is going to go to its nearest potential vessel (just like Aurora's went to Lily, Maeve's went to Molly, and Lily's went to Sarissa).  All Merlin had to do was figure a way to create a vessel and store it on Demonreach.  When the God/Goddess/Major Bad news baddy  is finally forgotten in total by mortals, their mantle travels to Demonreach and is imprisoned.  The same would hold true for entities killed in battle  (for example, Perseus killed the Kraken with Medusa's head).  The Kraken's mantle of power went to the nearest vessel and Demonreach held the only such vessel in reality.  Hence, it was imprisoned.

PS:  If you have to build a vessel to hold a mantle of power...having Soulfire (power of creation) isn't going to hurt your chances.

Exploring the possibility that the "Outsiders" are discarded minor deities, spirits, and regional/local entities of worship that have been cast out of reality due to a lack of any sort of recognition, one could extrapolate that the entities held on Demonreach are truly the most dangerous...and had they been cast out of reality to the plain of "empty night" where the war is going on, the "Outsiders" would be much stronger...and potentially, too strong.  Instead of a hive mentality, they would have leaders, generals, and improved strategy.  So, those held on Demonreach had to be kept separate.

Does that make any sense?

Still, I wouldn't think Nemisis (the Greek god) would be considered forgotten enough, to negate existence.  So, maybe the Outer Gates don't have any effect on the Oblivion War.

For this, I think you have to look at the philosophical make-up of Nemesis.  It was her job to take entities down a peg.  She was/is retribution for hubris.  I think it's fair to say that the old pantheon as well as a significant number of other long ago Gods/ Goddesses would feel anger towards mortals (as an example) for the ease in which they turned away from them.  There is obvious hubris in that.    In truth, there has even been an active organization trying to assure that is the case ( The True Venatoris).  I don't find it any stretch of the imagination to assume that even though Nemesis might not be at risk of being forgotten in total personally...there aren't quite a few Gods, Goddesses, gods, and goddesses who are approaching the cusp of banishment.  Many more have already faced it.  So, I don't think Nemesis would have to be an "Outsider" at all to perform as is her nature...especially since she probably was well familiar with many of the Gods, Goddesses, gods and goddesses that no longer exist in reality because mortals no longer recognize them personally or historically.

It would also explain how this war with the "Outsiders" has been going on forever.

Of course, if Nemesis was smart, she'd just update Wikipedia on a regular basis.   :o

I was going along the lines of Nemesis being a deity, and Outsiders are more or less Old Ones and their minions, so a slight misstep in my wording.

What I'm saying is, I think the Outsiders were not always Outsiders, their removal from reality to beyond the gates is what made them Outsiders, and this removal is some process that may occur to different entities at different points in history.

Oooooo...nice connection to the Oblivion War...and a reason that the bad guys seem to use the same hang-outs (Dock hang-out in Cold Days....Dock hang-out in Back-up)

Which explains why it seems to be Winter's lot to hold back and clean up the mess of one of her children.

I think you could make a pretty good argument that Mother Winter was behind the construction of Demonreach (if she's Nyx)  since she used to have a home in Tartarus.  It might, also, be the reason Harry needs to go to Hades, since Tartarus is Hades' basement.

Take your theory and apply Hesiod's opinion that Nemesis was actually the daughter of Nyx (Not Zeus).  Then plug in that Nyx is actually Mother Winter...and you have a problem child (one of many, by the way).  You, also, have Mother Winter as the oldest of the old, and  the mother of the fates (as well as a whole collection of conditions...including death, doom, sleep, old age, friendship, love, etc...).

Reading this thread...taking a step back for the overview...and speaking generally::

It seems this fight to come is one that has been going on since the beginning of time.  The only changes are the individual players...and not even that is as it appears since some of them (the key players) are the same, just wearing masks so it looks like a sequel with different characters...but they are the same.  Same plot...same characters...different location.

It's like...Hangover 2.

Themis...the Goddess of Justice.   She's the chick with the sword and the scales wearing a blindfold.  Considering there are statues of her in just about every government building, every law office, and topping stationary everywhere, and she is recognized as well as known throughout the world...she'd be S-T-R-O-N-G.  She'd, also, be merciless.

Then again it may not be. heck, it could be 'holographic'. its one of the great mysteries of modern science.

Not if you happen to have a Flux Capacitor.  :P

Eh...don't assume that only Angels can perceive time as non-linear.  The truth of the matter is that time IS non-linear.  It's a matter of wrapping your head around that.  There is no such thing as "now...or present."  Instead, there is past and future, that exist simultaneously.  Add to that fact (under the Theory of Relativity) that traveling at the speed of light suspends time and it seems clear that time is not an absolute....it's....well....relative.  Newton was wrong...Einstein was right.

When Lash sped up Harry's thinking process (to dangerous levels) in White Night...she was applying Einstein's Theory of Relativity.  The faster you go, the slower time passes.  This is only measurable (in human standards) at an approach to the "speed of light."  Therefore, Lash sped up Harry's thought process just short of the "speed of light" because time was still passing (tick........tick........tick).  Then, in Ghost Story, Uriel showed what a complete badass he was and moved Harry's speed of thought to exactly the "speed of light" because time no longer existed.  Everything became suspended in Molly's Star Trek mind.  He did so safely without any repercussions to Harry.

One could surmise that could you speed up your thought process beyond the "speed of light,"  it would result in a return to the very recent past.  That's the hard way to do it.  An easier way would be memory of a particular instant in your life.   Harry's ability to call on his brain to recall a moment in consciousness of the past is what gives the perception of linear time.  But, it is only perception.  That moment he recalls can be as real as right....NOW.  Of course, by the time he could shout out...."NOW," it's already part of the "past."

"No matter where your go...there you are."

Addendum:  For those convinced there must be a Present...provide me with the smallest number you can think of, and I'll divide it in half.

As far as this goes, I do think Harry is being a bit more proactive in changing things then just acquiring information. The figure actively pushes him into new ways of thinking about the situations he finds himself in. He gets the Present Harry to do things he otherwise would not do. But because his past self is still making the choices, then the inertia problem doesn't apply. I suppose that's just a different way of phrasing the same thing you just stated, so way for me being redundant. Future Harry is changing his past's perspective and choices, and presumably altering his present in so doing. Or perhaps making alternate realities/possibilities, like a reality sized Quantum Superposition - Odin's commentary on twinned universes seems to be kinda like multiverse theory.

Heh...try this one for more proactive.  Future Harry goes back to Past Harry and tells him to hide his 44 caliber gun in Lara Raith's office when he and Luccio go to visit in Turn Coat.  Then, down the road, Future Harry visits Lara Raith to intimidate her and agrees to leave all his weapons etc. with security.  When they get to Laura's office, he pulls the hidden 44 out from where it was hidden and starts negotiating.

It twas Uriel, page 470 hard cover copy, chapter fifty one.

Well, there you go.  There's no fear of paradox (which Vadderung claimed to be over-rated anyway).  Time travel exists within the individual with no direct contact to the outside world.  The only affectual (sic?) design is insight and perspective.

If you're "future" Harry and you want to change something instrumental that happened in the past....Good luck, because inertia (Law of Conservation of History) will likely be too strong to overcome.  However, if you wish to prepare for some unknown event yet to be accomplished, your future self can come back to your past self (via your subconscience) and push you in the desired direction to secure the knowledge your future self needs (but doesn't yet have).  It's not about changing a particular event.  It's about gaining the knowledge to better prepare for when that event is to occur.

As Vadderung said.  To rewrite history it's easier to change the future (paraphrase).

If you haven't grasped onto this yet...try this pseudo-scenario:

Future Harry learns that "So-and-So" is behind an attempt to blow up Demonreach.  However, he's never even heard of this "so-and-so."  So future Harry time travels (and since past, present, and future all exist in tandem...he side steps) to past Harry's subconscience and tells him to learn all about "So-and-so."   When Future Harry returns to his reality...wow...look at all that needed insight.

I'm sorry, but it seems to me a lot of your theory hinges on subconscious!Harry wearing the duster before the duster makes an appearance. Doesn't the new coat, the one that is definitely not the black leather duster, mean that the future!Harry you say is subconscious!Harry comes from before Cold days?

Hence the phrase that seems to be more important that any other...  "No matter where you go, there you are."  Somewhere in this series (I forget where) there is a conversation between Harry and someone else where it's stated that linear time really doesn't exist, but that's how a mortal's mind perceives time.  It could have been Uriel, or maybe Leanansidhe.  I think it was in Ghost Story.  Einstein would agree since he spent his last few years as a scientist stating that past, present and future all exist simultaneously.  They are a single existence.

In other words... "No matter where you go, there you are."
