DFRPG / Changeling the Lost?
« on: January 28, 2014, 09:14:53 PM »
Changeling the Lost is my favourite WOD game, though I use a highly hacked version to present more diversity amongst the True Fae i.e. more benevolent members and to amp up the urban fantasy feel. However, I love DFRPG and love it's portrayal of magic users i.e. wizards, focused practitioners, hedge-witches (custom template I made for middle ground spellcasters) and minor talents, well over Mage-pretty-much-a-god the awakening.

Do you think DFRPG could handle Changeling the Lost with Pledges, Contracts, Talecrafting, Hedgespinning etc. or is Changeling the Lost to complex for FATE?

Immunity to Power really should only be taken for powers that can actually effect other things, and not just yourself. In my setting its mostly to reflect the fact that Iron cannot be affected by any Faerie Magic, be it seelie/unseelie magic or Glamours. But it also affects some other powers. For example Incite Emotion used by a Raith WCV who take this frailty would be able to affect people who are truly in love with much less affect, a -2 to the rolls to be exact. To be honest the fact that physical immunity includes a -2 to all rolls when using or maintaining the powers effected by your Frailty when used against those carrying the Frailty is in my opinion worth another refresh point.

I can see your point, i will change it to no cost for refresh and try and come up with some new way it affects them physically rather than at the end of a scene I am just trying to show prolonged contact causes more and more harm to them. May i ask what you thought of the rest of it?

In my setting all Fae have a feeding dependency. To be honest i picked the end of a scene as a place-holder. May i ask what you would believe is better? I am really open to suggestions :-)

I was going to do that, but wanted to expand it to a Power, something that could be used for multiple things not just Fae and Iron. This is the rough version i am using. Bear in mind, my setting Fae are quite different, took inspiration from half a dozen different sources and created a new version of them. Finially finished with the PDF of it, almost 70 pages. The power is something i am still working on, and will add when i have it perfected.

Frailties [+1]
Description: Frailties are limitations on one’s power, similar to a catch. Like a catch, Frailties run the gamut from something like Iron to silver to rose petals to holy ground. Frailties are in essence a limitation one one’s power, your powers may not work as well when touching such things, may be weakened by them, might not be able to work at all or your character could even be harmed by your frailty.
Must: Must select one or more powers that are affected by your frailty when you purchase this power. Any power from the following groups may be affected, Faerie Magic, Minor Talents, Psychic Abilities, Shapeshifting, Spellcraft and Vampirism.
Skills Affected: Varies
Effects:
Weakened by Touch: When you are touching your Frailty, all your powers affected by it are harder to use and maintain, resulting in a -2 on all rolls to use or sustain your powers.
Immunity to Power [+1]: You cannot affect your Frailty in any way with your powers, any attempts too always fail. In addition when in the presence of high quantities of your Frailty or your target is carrying a large amount of your Frailty, your powers are weakened in the same way as if you were touching it.
Physically Weakened [+1]: Not only does your Frailty weaken your powers, but it also weakens you physically. For every scene you are touching your Frailty, one of your mental stress boxes fill, or if you have hunger stress, one of those boxes fill instead. If you possess any Toughness or Recovery Powers, you must take your Frailty as a Catch.

DFRPG / Quick Question concerning Iron and Fae.
« on: January 06, 2012, 02:19:48 AM »
Just a quick question to the forum. In my game Fae are far more susceptible to Iron than presented in the books. Not only does it harm them, but their magic cannot effect Iron in any way. Likewise its very touch weakens them and makes it more difficult to maintain a Veil or Glamour.  I am trying to figure out a way to express this within the game. I am thinking of adding it into the Catch, but am unsure how to price it. Any help would be greatly appreciated  :)

Another point to be made, aren't the bodies Fae use in the mortal realm just ectoplasm?  Stuff that disappears after they're done with it?  Unless it was a male fae, a female fae outside the Nevernever likely wouldn't be able to even BE impregnated, much less give birth to anything.

In Small Favour, chapter 2 when harry kills the gruffs
Quote
"That corpse is still there. It's mostly a burned mess, but it didn't dissolve"
"Yeah," I said. "Faeries aren't wholly beings of the spirit world. They leave corpses behind."

So the fae are not made of ectoplasm, rather they have physical bodies and therefore should be no issue with mating people. Now whether they can mate with White Court, cannon hasn't stated either way. Personally i would allow it, but only in the case of a White Court Virgin/Changeling, becoming one of the Fae or a full White Court Vampire would be choosing one side and therefore losing the powers from the other.

That's true for Changelings, but not scions.  All Changelings are scions but not all scions are Changelings.  Each type of scion is its own "type" while some might face a choice, or type of choice, I'd say that not all (and maybe not most) do.

Techinally if we are going by cannon, In one of the WOJ, jim butcher said that scions have to make a choice as well, just like changelings. I can't it at the moment, i know it was one of the more recent ones, as it was a question he was asked post GS

Oh your right, was in small favour, start of chapter 2

"Yeah," I said. "Faeries aren't wholly beings of the spirit world. They leave corpses behind.

I had a feeling it had been stated in the books, thanks for reminding me where it was Taran.

Your right, there isn't any specific concering if they are made of ectoplasm, so i guess until we know for sure it will always be conjecture either way. On the note though about how lea could have entered the threshold of harry's apartment, i was rereading the short story something borrowed today, and jenny greenteeth was able to enter the threshold of georgia and billy's apartment to kidnap georgia. And within the same story, harry comments on how their apartment has a very strong threshold. From this i can only interpret that the Fae are able to enter threshold's, but most likely lose a large portion of their power like wizards do (jenny physically attacked georgia rather than use magic on her which seems to support that she lost most of her magical oomph when she entered the threshold).

Honestly the reason i think lea was able to bypass the threshold is because the fae don't manifest bodies like spirits. They are flesh (of a sort), not made form ectoplasm. The fae we have seen die in the books haven't broken apart into ectoplasm like demons, spirits etc. who make bodies out of ectoplasm to manifest in our world. But they would of course lose a portion of their powers upon crossing a threshold just like wizards do.

Well the erlking in itself is a touch confusing, i mean one wouldn't really class him as a court of his own since according to WOJ he is a king of summer.

DFRPG / Re: Why would the Autumn/Spring courts have Queens?
« on: January 19, 2011, 04:28:01 AM »
It seems reasonable, albeit it clashes with WOJ. In one interview Jim states that the Erlking is the king of Summer and Santa Clause the king of winter.

Quote
Dragon-Con @6:30
Where are the Farie kings?  Do they exist?
Yes they do.  The Erlking as sort of the Hunter king, and Santa Clause, the Winter king who is not the commercial Santa Clause.  The kings are sort of the opposite of the queens in their given season.  They are independent of their Queen’s courts.  The Erlking is a summer king and he is not a particularly friendly guy, whereas Santa Clause, one of the winter kings, is kinder, the spirit of generosity in a time of bleakness.  Yah I’ve gota have Harry ask Mab about him so she can roll her eyes.

However it is your game, and you are free to change whatever you want really to make it work for you :-)

DFRPG / Re: Trying to figure out my template...
« on: July 21, 2010, 01:24:05 PM »
I actually came up with a template that matches your character perfectly on another thread. Btw i allow characters who take this template to take more than one refinement if they wish, but doing so they can never take Evocation. So its a choice either learn Evocation some day by advancing to a Sorcerer or Wizard or focus completely on Thaumaturaphy and become a more powerful Hedge Witch or Hedge Wizard.

I created this template because I felt there was something missing in the low level spell casters Templates. I felt that while the Focused Practitioner is well and good for some low level practitioners, it neglected to show those who have more well rounded mystical portfolio, but lack the ability to use evocation or Channeling.

Hedge Witches and Hedge Wizards are quite skilled at numerous spells and areas of magic, but they take time to actually cast their spells. This is reflected in their ability to use Thaumaturgy just like Wizards or Sorcerers but they lack the power or skill to actually wield Evocations.
Many Hedge Witches and Hedge Wizards colour their magic and spells with some alternative religious feel, being that many are also Wiccans, New Age believers, practitioners of religions like Sanitaria or Voodoo etc. This means that for them to cast their spells they need the trappings of their faith and their beliefs, for example most Wiccans have an altar which they practice their magic, including statues of various deities and other magical trappings like a pentacle, Athame, incense etc.

Musts: A Hedge Witch or Hedge Wizard must take a High Concept that declares his or her nature as a Hedge Witch or Hedge Wizard, such as MEMBER OF THE ORDO LEBES or SOCCER MUM/WITCH. In addition the Character must take the following supernatural power:

Thaumaturgy [–3] (YS page 181)

See the power description for more details.

Options: Hedge Witches/Wizards may take the Sight (-1) which would function the same as for Wizards and Sorcerers, but this is rare. In addition, they may take Refinement (-1), once per play. It should be noted that they can never take Evocation, if they want to purchase Evocation they must upgrade to Wizard or Sorcerer.

Important Skills: Conviction (YS page 124), Discipline (YS page 127), Lore (YS page 134).

Minimum Refresh Cost: -3

From the Casefiles: Kim Delaney (OW130). Also Anna Ash, (OW103), simply replaces Rituals with Thaumaturgy and raises her refresh to -3. In addition Charity Carpenter when she was younger was a Hedge Witch.
