Baba Yaga the wicked witch of  eastern European folklore
IMHO we have seen her, or rather one of her aspects. Baba Yaga = Mother Winter...

6) Spirits of place (You could easily argue that most cities have spirits of place - and that old, strongly charged, powerful ones might have agents)

i would think most big european and asian cities might have these, however american cities may be too new. it might be fun to be the first spirit of new york or chicago.

spirit of gotham = the dark knight

Name: Waldo Butters
Aspects:
High Concept: Clued-In Medical Examiner
Trouble: My Colleagues Think I’m Insane
Other:
Physician to Wizards;
Musician’s Soul;
The Dead can Speak;
By The Book? What Book?;
Polka Will Never Die!

Skills:

Great: Scholarship,
Good: Alertness, Performance, Rapport,
Fair: Athletics, Deceit, Discipline, Empathy,
Average: Conviction, Endurance, Lore, Presence,

Stunts:
Fleet of Foot (Athletics)
Medical Examiner (Scholarship)
Doctor (Forensic Medicine) (Scholarship)

Total: -1 Refresh (Pure Mortal)

Stress:

Mental: OOO
Physical: OOO
Social: OOO
Armor: 0, or 1 with Kevlar.

Here's Butters. He's a full Waist Deep Pure Mortal. At least post-Dead Beat. I'd drop him a full level to Feet Wet prior to that, and likely drop Conviction and Presence to Mediocre, along with Athletics and Discipline to Average, and Performance to Fair. He grew a lot as a person during Dead Beat, which I don't think the official stats acknowledge appropriately. Hence this. He's still not the most combative person on the block, but he's more dangerous than he looks, and a good friend to have.
im wondering, since harry taught him how to use a magic circle for protection how could that be represented? thaumaturgy and ritual seem over the top, but i think this should be represented by something. what do yall think?

started as an npc but i now i just want to play him
High concept: Ronin Wizzard
Trouble: "you wouldn't like me when im angry"
background: From a long line of wardens
rising conflict: headstrong then, stubborn now
story: "No, But I read a book on it."
geust star:  my mouth is a double edge sword
Geaust star2: "I still have friends on the council"

basically he was raised with expectation that he would become a ward scince his father and gradfathers were warden, and waised taught the 7 laws very early. he was also taught many of the "old tricks" of the wardens. his father was killed "on the job" and mother died in a car accedent a few years later he moved from the subburbs and was taken in and aprenticed to his strict grandfather on a ranch in colorado. he was taught the old fashoned way, think rocks for shield practice. he suplemented his warden training with many books from the library (he had to ride his horse) he is very well read (he liked samurai stories aswell) while he was still an apprentice he was brought to a few official white court trial and witnessed first hand thier conclusions. be fore he was to take the "exam" he convinced his grandfather to take him to a secret meeting in Archangelsk, Russia. he was the sole survior to escape into the nevernever, and while fighting off a dozen RC vamps(think bubble), maeve (yes that one) showed up and offered him safe passage as a geust back to his exit, for one little favor to be named later. after a few brief caveats he aggreed and she vampcicles. and he still owes her one. when he returned he spent months recovering and training, but was disgusted to learn that the white council was still sueing for peace rather than gearing up to fight. he amazed his warden test giver (some guy his own age named carlos) away with his power. however he flat our refused to join the white counciluntill they fought the war in earnest. surprisingly many hawkish wardens and wizzards understand his reasons, and some even think he could make an excellent "asset." he will bow to no one but work with any one to hurt the reds.

And possibly a violation of the First Law

ooo even more interesting! :D

Oh, yeah. The Aspects definitely change. Precisely how, I'd wait for the next book to see. I more or less assume an Aspect change or two per book. What they change to is so debatable, though, that I rarely list specifics.

i forget what page i read it on but "he did what he had to do" was in there after about himself after

So, we have a general skill and Refresh range thanks to the book, and know where most of the Refresh went to boot, but still, we don't have a comprehensive picture of Harry...which leaves us free to make up our own. Here's mine. It's based off of immediately post Small Favor, with notes on changes post Turn Coat and Changes.

Name: Harry Dresden

Aspects:
High Concept: Warden of the White Council
Trouble: The Temptation of Power
Other:
Epic Wiseass
I Trust My Brother
He Did the Right Thing
Mentor to Molly Carpenter
The Building Was On Fire and It Wasn’t My Fault

Skills:

Superb: Conviction, Endurance
Great: Discipline, Intimidation, Lore
Good: Alertness, Athletics, Contacts
Fair: Deceit, Guns, Investigation, Rapport, Weapons,
Average: Burglary, Fists, Performance, Presence, Scholarship, Stealth

Stunts:

Listening (See sheet) (-1)

Powers:

Refinements [-4]
Evocation [–3]
Thaumaturgy [–3]
Sponsored Magic: Soulfire [-3]
The Sight [–1]
Soulgaze [+0]
Wizard’s Constitution [+0]
Lawbreaker (First) [–1]

Total: -16 Refresh

Powers:

Evocation: Elements (Air, Fire, Earth, Spirit); Power (Spirit +1, Fire+2)
Thaumaturgy: Control (Divination +1); Crafting (Strength +1)

Focus Items:
Shield Bracelet [+2 Defensive Control with Spirit]
Blasting Rod [+2 Offensive Control with Fire]
Wizard’s Staff [+1 Offensive Control with Spirit]

Enchanted Items:
Force Rings+Lightning Chain [Five Weapon: 5 Attacks with Discipline] (3 Enchanted Item Slots)
Enchanted Duster [Three Strength 4 Blocks or Armor Value 2, can be worn by others] (2 Enchanted Item Slots)
1 Potion Slot

Stress:

Mental: OOOO (+1 Minor Consequence)
Physical: OOOO (+1 Minor Consequence)
Social: OOO
Armor: By spell or item effect.

Notes for Turn Coat: After Turn Coat (a Major Milestone, I think), Harry’s Fists goes to Fair, and he gains Empathy at Average. His Refresh goes up by 1, which he uncharacteristically saves.

Then comes Changes. Oh boy. By my count, Harry undergoes 3 Major Milestones in this book, maybe 4. Yes, really. First, he undergoes one by assuming the mantle of the Winter Knight, and then two more at the end (rescue and genocide, respectively). His Weapons rises to Good, and at the end so does his Fists, while his Athletics rises to Great. He also, unfortunately, gains -7 Refresh worth of powers (Unseelie Magic, Inhuman Strength, Speed, and Toughness, with the normal Winter Knight Catch) and would be reduced to NPC-dom at the end of the scenario...if other forces didn't intervene.

So there's that. Anyone with questions, comments, or their own version is welcome to post it.

i think for the most part you're right on but i think his Aspect "He Did the Right Thing" should be "He Did What He Had To Do" and "I trust my brother" to "my mother's red gem" tomas hasnt been around alot lately
and there is a lot of potential to tap there.
how ever i think harry has at least 7-13 major milestones over the course of the series and dozen significant milestones over the years raising your base refresh level plenty.
also, harry taking up the winter knight mantle, could definately be considered "going up a weightclass" so raising the skill cap to fantastic +6 is feasable.

DFRPG / rote spells and focus items
« on: April 22, 2010, 05:39:23 AM »
im feeling confused about about the rules so i thought id post. so just to clarify, you can tie a rote spell to a focus item to get the bonus from it but you will always need that item to cast it. also you can choose to lock down the item just for that rote spell for a +1 slot bonus, but you dont have to right?
sorry, im used to being a rules lawer for my group.

It's a standard attack roll. Margin of success determines the base number of shifts. The shifts in the spell are all about establishing a Weapon:X value.
thanx i geuss i just need to re-read a few times

Conviction = weapon value.

Attack with Discipline. + dice roll = to hit

Defend with resisting skill + roll = hit or miss

If it's a hit then damage = weapon value + shift difference (on to hit vs defense) - resistance (armor/toughness/etc).

i was confused by the example in the book (YS.251) because, harry got a +4 on his dicipline roll that he suplimented by invoking his aspects, and the vampire also got a +4 on his block. also under "HOW to do it" nothing is mentioned about adding the dicipline roll into the total shifts. it was confusing to me and my brain :-\

so under a succesful evocation attack the total stres is equal to the shifts of power AND the block?
