Author Craft / Re: How likeable does a main character have to be.

the character will appeal to some people though. I know i cant be the only one tired of heros who repeatedly have the chance to kill the villan, but dont because its the wrong thing to do.  Then when something finally happens that they have to, they spend the next 5 chapters worring about whether they did the right thing.  This character runs into problems, he will usually try at least once yo deal with it in a diplomatic manner.  If it dosent work he shoots it, and moves on.

Fanfics, if done right can be quite good.  Too bad they usually suck.

Most of them suffer from at least one if not all of these major flaws.

Self insertion - This is the worse of the worse.  this is usually accompanied by describing how much cooler they are than the other characters, and they almost always play a more important role than anyone else.

Character removal - Take a character you dont like, and simply remove him. Often times either killing them off early, or not even bothering to mention them.

Personality changes - OOC (out of character)comments and actions.  some are acceptable, but others are just wrong.  whats worse is when theres a hastily scribble back story to explain why someone does something OOC.  Thats almost admitting that they know what they are doing is wrong.

Background drops - What would Luke Skywalker do when stuck in a Lord of the Rings world?  DOnt know, i dont care.  Too bad that person did.

Romance stories - I really dont need/want the details of what Captain Picard Dr. Crusher and Lt. Troy were doing on their holodeck vacation to Tahiti.

I have tried some fanfiction, and I find it very constricting, due to the fact you must follow someone else's laws and rules, as it is their world.

the greatest problem comes down to some people believeing that if its too hard to work within the rules, ignore the rules.

I'm thinking about a sci-fi space story. in the books, the main character has huge charisma, most story characters love him.  Readers might not feel the same way.

Its hard to describe why, but think Lex Luthur without the psychotic obsession to take over the world in 20 minutes, and a lot of charisma.  He has a understanding of "good" and an understanding of why people who follow that path win.

in proven guilty theres a cheap shot/homage at "aliens" that i though was quite excellent.  Sometimes its best just to have a few trusted friends look over something though its the only way to be sure.

it can. There are times where people write characters that do nothing but swear, and it just dosent work.  Then agin, most people faced with a quick violent death might just let a few words escape their lips.  I think it has to be done tastefully.

DF TV Series / Re: BOARD POLICY: NO STORY IDEAS

this should be a safe way provide an example, if not, delete it.

story idea: (type of thing you cant do.)

Darth vader needs to go searching for the children while hunting the few remaing jedi.

then he should have to run into trouble from rebling planets, thus running into the need to construct a weapon that can destroy planets.

IIRC it's been done before, but usually in shorter-length works.

The most obvious that springs to mind is the work of H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard, whose shared ideas sort of swam together ... I wouldn't say they were a hard-facts SETTING, but it did lay the groundwork of the mythos and later authors still work in that shared space.

Thieve's World ... hrm.

It's not unheard of, but not terribly regular.  I'd say that sort of thing tends to come together when you have people who are good/close friends who are writers who seek one another out for creative inspiration.  Dunno as you find that too often, anymore.

I doubt it would happen with, say, a setting that has been in print already.  If nothing else, there are few authors who would want to work in another writer's setting.  Most folks have something they think they can do better or would change about another author's setting.  And far far fewer authors would be interested/willing to have people mucking about in their creations.
