DFRPG / Re: Stating a wizard's temper

Yeah, I'm just waiting to hear back from my GM. I like it b/c it doesn't make the character have an irrational temper (like one of the other PCs), more of a focused one like Harry's.

I'm playing a Warden that play has revealed to have a similarly short fuse. My suggestion to my GM was to change my Trouble to "Allergic to Bullshit."

True, and my other post wasn't as clear as I meant it to be. I intended a helpful "Take charge of your gaming experience man! Be pro-active!" and it came out more "Hey! Maybe it's your fault! Huh huh? Yeah, you jerk!"

I've been on both sides of the "This gaming is going nowhere," and I'll say it's much harder to get players to step up and be driving forces in the story if they don't want to be, or are unaccustomed to being strong driving forces, than it is to get the GM moving.

I have to agree completely with that. While I'm not currently playing in a DV game (I'm up next as GM in rotations of who runs the game in my group, so hopefully soon),  I'm in two other games a week. And my least favorite is my Saturday game. We have 4-5 PCs there every week, and while I generally like all the characters and the setting is interesting, the GM always gives us leads and then nothing happens. We don't really progress the story or figure things out. Things just resolve as a matter of fact. The only reason I continue is that I like spending the time with my friends whom I wouldn't get to see otherwise due to IRL constraints.

A GM isn't a writer, trying to get people to read his story. Well, not just a writer. He has to be able to engage his players and work with them in a way that lets everyone have a good time. Otherwise, what's the point?
Games like that can be tedious. But does nothing happen in session b/c the GM is trying to keep you on the rails or because he's running a more sandbox style game the players aren't actively driving the story? Lack of story development isn't always the GM's fault.

I think my interpretation is obviously looser and less precise, but it puts such a scene within reach of a wizardly PC without needing refresh levels in the teens or twenties.
Which obviously Listens-to-the-Wind would have, but still a good point.

well, what year do the books actually take place in?  I think the date I saw was in the early 1970's...
Um, what? Do you mean that's how long Mac's has been there?

For what it's worth, I believe Fred has said that one of the chapters in Rumors from the Paranet will cover the Russian revolution and and Simon Pietrovich's involvement in it.

Can't catch one bit... did where did he say the Gatekeeper's domain is?  I heard the part about the Moon and Nevernever, but not where his actual citadel is on terra firma.
Who says it has to be on terra firma? I'd actually be surprised if the Gatekeeper's domain isn't in the Nevernever, or perhaps someplace even stranger...

I do think wizards can be crazy in damage department, but they are balanced out by being squishy.

And don't have much staying power. Wizards can drop crazy powerful spells/attacks, but can't keep it up for very long w/out getting into Consequences.

DFRPG / Re: 4th Nail/Sword of the Cross ideas suggestions?
« on: January 19, 2011, 01:40:01 AM »
In the game I'm in we've a PC that is a 4th KotC. Her blade is Redemptiaccius, the blade of redemption. The name is kinda awkward, but my GM said the latin for redemption is basically "redemption." *  Sounds like an awesome story you've got ahead of you.

*He said it's redemptio or some such. Forget exactly now, but he's a 4th year latin student so I took him at his word.

I second the vote for Dragon*Con again this year. Glad I got to the signing line 3 hours early or I wouldn't have gotten in. Got to meet Fred Hicks too, which was an unexpected bonus.

Also, how about Chattanooga? A bookstore signing or one of the small sci-fi conventions in town would be awesome.

DFRPG / Re: New Stunt: Iron Mind
« on: December 09, 2010, 07:59:51 PM »
I think the deemphasis of mental powers may be the reason such stunts and toughness powers weren't developed. Or maybe the game designers wanted to ensure that Mental threats were more potent when they got used.
While Mental threats being well scary is definitely something I like, I'm still surprised there isn't something in the book considering Wizards (or any other mortal caster) gain Mental Stress like a fat kid going through Halloween candy. It makes sense that someone that is routinely tossing spells around would eventually gain more Mental resilience than what they would have from simply having a high Conviction score.

DFRPG / Re: Odd City Settings?

I think Chattanooga would make for a fun city. Lots of ghost stories about the area, several major Civil War battles in the area and a really stark poor/rich contrast to the city.

He said that in 2007. Since then both a public rental luggage locker and a public storage facility have been warded. Any "rule" of magic should at most be only viewed as a guideline for how it works for most people, most of the time.
I don't remember exactly about the locker, but I'm fairly certain the storage unit was described as having runes scrawled all over the inside, which would say to me that Harry was anchoring the ward on those runes instead of a threshold.

DFRPG / Re: Is there anything elements CAN'T do?
« on: October 23, 2010, 05:52:43 AM »
For instance, you might say Air is great for battering things around, but not for doing direct damage.
This is simply not true. You can use Air to create a highly focused lance of steam, which can slice through nearly anything. Especially squishy monsters.

Basically the only limits on a given element is how creative you or your players are.
