Author Craft / Any Advice?
« on: August 11, 2010, 02:57:47 AM »
Hello all,
I've got an issue...
I decided to write my first story (the idea in my head that wouldn't go away). I spent months developing my story, working on the characters, changing my outline, reading everything I could find on the craft, etc... A week or 2 ago I decided my outline was done and everything was ready to finally write my first draft...and nothing. I don't know what the mental block is but I'm having a heckuva time even making myself think about my story, much less work on it.
So my questions are:
1. Is this normal? Do a lot of people go through this?
and
2. Any advice on getting over this hurdle?

I really do not want to see this story die before it even gets started. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

are two sites that i like a lot. Donald Maas has some books on writing that are very good.

Also, "Animal I have become" by 3 days grace might work. Good bassline.

It may get ruled out for regionalness or already usedness, but "Only after dark" by Tito and Tarantula is THE vampire striptease song that jumps into my head. It is the song used during the stripscene in From Dusk til Dawn...I love the guitar in that song.

A guitar (especially an indestructable one) would IMO make a very effective club. Is it just the body of the guitar that is magic or would playing different notes/songs have different effects (siren song or spellcasting by different melodies)? When strings go out of tune they don't usually slide down a whole note i.e. E to D#.  It normally ends up somewhere in the middle of the 2 notes, so it would definitely be difficult to play, unless it was in tune but to an unusual tuning...IDK, interesting question.
Either way cool idea. GL.

Bottom line - Write the book you need to write and don't worry about genre until you have the book finished, polished and ready to send to an agent.

Sound advice...thanks all

I never even considered YA. Interesting.

The story has an action / adventure feel with heavy fantasy / mythological overtones. there might be some humor and there will be a romance line but that is definitely secondary in the story. I foresee it being kind of dark. (actually, now that I think about it there will be at least 2 scenes that will have fairly nasty deaths)
To the reader it is an obvious fakery but not to the characters who are being lied to.

Newbie here so hope this is posted in the right place.
Anyway,
If a story revolves around a fake fantasy element (for example, a group of kids pulling a complex hoax and convincing classmates they are werewolves/possessed/whatever), but nothing actually fantastical going on...same old world and same old people... is it considered fantasy? And if not, what?
Thanx in advance,
Eddie

Howdy all,
I'm Eddie. I just found this site so am a little late to the party, but I'll be polite and introduce myself real quick. Unlike most of the posts I've read here I haven't been writing my whole life. There has been a story banging around in my head for a long time and I finally decided to try to get it out on paper. It's Fantasy-ish and I am currently outlining/getting to know my characters. I finally figured out the beginning of my story but don't know the end yet.
Anyhoo, JB is one of the two authors that finally inspired me to get my rear in gear and start working earnestly on it, and finding his writing tips journal was a minor epiphany for me, (it's amazing how easy something can seem to the person who has no idea how it actually works) and this forum is great. Knowing there are others attempting this makes me feel less crazy in trying to pursue what is quickly becoming an obsession. So, good to meet all of you (in an internet-y sort of way) and see you on the forums.
